Particularly in France, with the new speed limits, I find it difficult to keep an eye on my speed. With a a swivel seat, which raises my position, plus bright sunlight and the need to convert kph to mph, all making the speed difficult to monitor

I have downloaded a free App, DigiHUD Speedometer, a GPS based digital head up display, on to an old Nexus phone and placed it in a holder that we used to use for a Sat Nav. I now have a large digital reading right in front of me that lets me see the speed without taking my eyes off the road

I have to be a bit more careful as the speed shown is accurate but about 3% higher than the speedometer reading

Had that for a few years, do you think it is more accurate than the speedo?

Yes, more accurate, when compared to speed warning signs on the road side or my Sat Nav. The problem is that the speedometer tends to over-read by about 3%, so a small allowance if over-speeding

Surely you mean lower which is normal.

GPS SPEEDOMETER in play store.

Clear digits but no GPS indoors.

Speedos are designed to display a faster speed than actual, so they could be regarded as inaccurate because of that. But, if you knew what percentage they over-read by and corrected for that, they may be more accurate than any GPS.
I've just completed a journey with four different GPS readouts in view and most were different for most of the time (often by at least 5% or 3mph in 60). GPS accuracy will depend on the number of satellites the device can 'see', then the algorithm used to calculate position and the frequency of updates. Some will be much better at it than others, just as some watches are at keeping time.
Don't be fooled by the precision of a readout to many decimal places. They only do that because they can.

140MPH???

What sort of moho have you got?
One attached to an intercity train engine on the Dover line. :xlaugh:
Wondered how long before someone noticed.

I installed it out of boredom and curiosity as to how fast the train was going on the trip to Canterbury for daughters graduation.

Use this one on an old smart phone well impressed and of course it’s free good for walking and cycling as well.

My sprinter has an option to show actual speed in kM/H on the instrument cluster (instead of external temp). Use it all the time whilst abroad.

I have always used the Tom Tom up to now, just couldn't get on with the speedo on the Ducato. May try one of the apps on the phone as well though good idea with the large digits.

KPH on the Tom Tom and the larger MPH on the Ducato dash when in Europe. When I occasionally check they seem aligned.

I just use the kph display on the Mercedes. It has another advantage in that the speed limiter then works in 10 kph steps.

Speedometers are not accurate because of tyre wear why not just use a satnag it would be just as accurate?

There use to be 10%built in and that was allowed for when caught speeding ie couldn’t get done for 44 in a 40 limit don’t know if it’s the same now

No, it was the other way around: speedos can never under-read. So if your speedo reads 40mph there is no possible way you could be exceeding 40mph. More than likely you would be travelling at 36mph or less.
