Habitation door on wrong side

if you drive it backwards.................then is it on the right side?(y)

I have to say we haven’t used lots of sites but the ones we have used I always reverse onto the pitch.

I do this as we have a fixed bed at the rear.
Don’t tend to stay anywhere too long, no I don’t get thrown out, so not too bothered about which side the sun is etc ?

We regularly tour in Europe in a British van so our hab door is on the wrong side there. Never had any problems. On aires we do try to park the opposite way to our neighbour to avoid clashing doors! If you are worried about getting the dog out in British lay-bys, use the cab door, unless of course your dog is too small to jump back in!

they seem to know how to make lightweight catavans
Here's just the thing: :D:D

We are in the Caravan Club. We’ve noticed a change with the wardens, recently. They seem more friendly and focused upon providing a good service. This has included being aware of the issues with motorhomes. We’ve never been told, in six years of membership, which way round to park.

I tend use more CMC sites than others (over 130 sites in 5 years) and the rules are simple - if you reverse in you line up with the peg on the offside, if you drive in it's the nearside. This is to maintain the 6m fire regulation regs between outfits, as I understand it. So not over - officiousness - it just allows safety and personal space. Something I didn't get on a private site on Skye, where I had decent room between me and the next outfit, but late at night found I could hear snoring and realised the owner had allowed a camper to park between me and my neighbour!

I believe it's not a regulation but a recommendation for a 6m space. Anyone who has been across the channel will no doubt have experiences, like me, of sometimes not being able to open the door because vans are closely packed into Aires and campsites. I've never heard of any loss of life due to fire. As much as we do use campsites, along with free camping, I hate their dominating, superior, attitude with signs plastered everywhere - but each to their own.

We have a Rapido, great build quality and no issues with a RHS door. I can't remember if you mentioned the model number but if it is an A class they are built heavy and payload can be an issue with 3500 kg plated vehicle.

We use whichever door is safest for letting our dogs out, we always have RHD vehicles so if we are in a layby immediately adjacent to the road in the UK we use the passenger door, abroad it's the hab door. This is the advantage of having RHD, if it was a LHD we'd have to struggle past the steering wheel to get out on the left!

Our new RHD A-class motorhome has a UK passenger door (would be the driver's door if LHD) and a offside hab door so we still have a choice which to use.

Spend your time on the continent, good weather, empty roads, nice people and lots of good campsites where nobodies bothered what you do.

I do the same...in fact my dogs can jump in the passenger front door easier than the hab door.

Thanks again for all the replies...took away the slight concerns we had re snobby CMC-style sites. So off we went yesterday after the rugby in the pouring rain to the dealer with our best negotiating strategies all prep'd only to find out they'd taken a deposit half an hour earlier. I'd told the dealer I was probably coming back but hadn't reserved the viewing or asked to have first offer - darn! :crying:
They've said if the deal falls through they'll let us know...but it's unlikely as deposit is paid.

Shame, even worse knowing it is going to someone who wasn’t watching the rugby, might even be a soccer fan .

CMC has lots of rules but on this they are fairly relaxed. Have been told more than once not to worry about which way we are facing as long as we are lined up on the correct side of the post.

There will be plenty more

Get yourself on eBay and skip the dealer....save yourself a fortune

All of our vans have been LHD with the hab door on the right hand side, even when we lived in the UK, and the only site where we were instructed on which way round to park was at Grantown-on-Spey (Caravan Club, I think).
Been there loads of times and I park whichever way it suits me and never had a problem. Never been instructed to park a certain way either (y)

We were in a large RV, so maybe that had something to do with it. Didn't bother me as I didn't really care either way. We were only there for the one night so we could go to the Indian Restaurant, which was excellent.

We’ve been occasional visitors to C&MC and C&CC sites for 6 years and never had any issues about our door being on the right side. As long as one corner of the van is next to one of their stupid little white pegs, you’ll be fine.
Better still, use indépendant sites or the smaller listed sites. They generally aren’t quite as anal about parking.

The only time I have been asked to park the other way round was an independent site, I said no so they offered me a corner pitch where my door would not upset anybody. Bloody silly. No problems on C&MC or C&CC sites and I haven’t found any other independent sites with silly ideas.

There is no right and wrong side.

well, there’s the offside,nearside,and upsidedown side:LOL:
Our last Five have been on what’s generally stated as the wrong side but never a problem and if you have only door the security is greatly improved.

Only problem we have had with our only door on RH of our N&B Arto was in UK when we pulled onto hard shoulder. I had kept close to LH edge so had room to exit safely, but as I opened the door a 44-tonner passed and his 'bow-wave' snatched the door out of my hand. Fortunately no damage, but I am now more careful to hold a tight grip in similar circumstances.

Hi - we're looking around at changing our van and one we like is a Rapido model. While I do have some reservations about French build quality it is a nice bit of kit but with one quirk in that the habitation door is on the Right Hand Side. It is a coachbuilt so we have cab doors on both sides so no issue there, and there is the obvious issue of the hab door opening into traffic if we needed to (eg - getting the dog out). But what I'm wondering from anyone who has a RH side hab door, does this cause issues at some campsites? Many are relaxed about how you park but some do insist that you reverse in - if we do that with this one our hab door will be on the wrong side. Anyone with a continental van had any issues with this? Thanks
Have had 4 now with this configuration and never had a problem. Most EU built ones have this set up.

I just ask when I book in pointing out that our hab door is on the offside. It has never been an issue.

We are onto our 4th van and only the first had the habdoor on the UK side.

I recently did a trip in my French MH to the UK which has the habitation door on the French side. It was more of an issue than I first thought. Especially if you will be using mostly campsites. Yes most do insist that you reverse in and you end up with the door opening onto wet grass etc. I didn't use the awning on the trip but that will be a problem also as you will end up on your neighbors pitch facing them.

Didn't someone post a while back that the site on way to Burnham won't allow mh's with offside doors.

Home farm holiday park it was.

Like you I thought this would be an issue and I thought about it long and hard before taking the plunge with mine. Only been doing this for 3 years but can honestly say it hasn't been an issue once in all the sites I've visited in England or France.

My hab door is on the right hand side, I’ve stopped on quite a few sites in the UK but I’ve never come across these wardens that tell you how you are going to park.
I can’t wait for the day, I’m really looking forward to it. ??

We have only had one motorhome with UK door, the other 3 have been Continental never had any problems, on a club site once he told me peg on lefthand corner, and I ignored him and had it on the right hand corner. ?
Eldest daughter has a VW camper LHD and as you say door on the wrong side, ? they love it, and no problems. ? Bob.
