if you drive it backwards.................then is it on the right side?

Here's just the thing:they seem to know how to make lightweight catavans
I believe it's not a regulation but a recommendation for a 6m space. Anyone who has been across the channel will no doubt have experiences, like me, of sometimes not being able to open the door because vans are closely packed into Aires and campsites. I've never heard of any loss of life due to fire. As much as we do use campsites, along with free camping, I hate their dominating, superior, attitude with signs plastered everywhere - but each to their own.I tend use more CMC sites than others (over 130 sites in 5 years) and the rules are simple - if you reverse in you line up with the peg on the offside, if you drive in it's the nearside. This is to maintain the 6m fire regulation regs between outfits, as I understand it. So not over - officiousness - it just allows safety and personal space. Something I didn't get on a private site on Skye, where I had decent room between me and the next outfit, but late at night found I could hear snoring and realised the owner had allowed a camper to park between me and my neighbour!

I do the same...in fact my dogs can jump in the passenger front door easier than the hab door.We use whichever door is safest for letting our dogs out, we always have RHD vehicles so if we are in a layby immediately adjacent to the road in the UK we use the passenger door, abroad it's the hab door. This is the advantage of having RHD, if it was a LHD we'd have to struggle past the steering wheel to get out on the left!
Our new RHD A-class motorhome has a UK passenger door (would be the driver's door if LHD) and a offside hab door so we still have a choice which to use.
Shame, even worse knowing it is going to someone who wasn’t watching the rugby, might even be a soccer fanThanks again for all the replies...took away the slight concerns we had re snobby CMC-style sites. So off we went yesterday after the rugby in the pouring rain to the dealer with our best negotiating strategies all prep'd only to find out they'd taken a deposit half an hour earlier. I'd told the dealer I was probably coming back but hadn't reserved the viewing or asked to have first offer - darn!
They've said if the deal falls through they'll let us know...but it's unlikely as deposit is paid.

Been there loads of times and I park whichever way it suits me and never had a problem. Never been instructed to park a certain way eitherAll of our vans have been LHD with the hab door on the right hand side, even when we lived in the UK, and the only site where we were instructed on which way round to park was at Grantown-on-Spey (Caravan Club, I think).
We were in a large RV, so maybe that had something to do with it. Didn't bother me as I didn't really care either way. We were only there for the one night so we could go to the Indian Restaurant, which was excellent.Been there loads of times and I park whichever way it suits me and never had a problem. The only time I have been asked to park the other way round was an independent site, I said no so they offered me a corner pitch where my door would not upset anybody. Bloody silly. No problems on C&MC or C&CC sites and I haven’t found any other independent sites with silly ideas. We’ve been occasional visitors to C&MC and C&CC sites for 6 years and never had any issues about our door being on the right side. As long as one corner of the van is next to one of their stupid little white pegs, you’ll be fine.
Better still, use indépendant sites or the smaller listed sites. They generally aren’t quite as anal about parking.
There is no right and wrong side.
Have had 4 now with this configuration and never had a problem. Most EU built ones have this set up.Hi - we're looking around at changing our van and one we like is a Rapido model. While I do have some reservations about French build quality it is a nice bit of kit but with one quirk in that the habitation door is on the Right Hand Side. It is a coachbuilt so we have cab doors on both sides so no issue there, and there is the obvious issue of the hab door opening into traffic if we needed to (eg - getting the dog out). But what I'm wondering from anyone who has a RH side hab door, does this cause issues at some campsites? Many are relaxed about how you park but some do insist that you reverse in - if we do that with this one our hab door will be on the wrong side. Anyone with a continental van had any issues with this? Thanks
Agree Rapidorob; its all in the name!rapido build quality is excellent, and the hab door on the uk offside no real issue at all
