Back motorhoming after a 6ish year break!
Hi all

We are off on our first adventure on the new van very soon.

I was wondering what the food prices are like generally now in France compared to the UK?

Is there anything that is now astronomical compared to what it used to be? I love shopping in the French supermarche and we will be eating out more than usual as we are holidaying with my sister and brother in law but I hate being ripped off so would rather take with me if I can.

*Edited to say family of 4 inc 2 teens. Probably 4/5 years since been to France
Many thanks 🙂

We found French supermarket food expensive but good quality compared to UK. They have value brands which seem to be as good as regular UK stuff and about the same price. Really cheap stuff is not really a thing there.

Cheap as chips 😉 went to France this morning to do the weekly shop, hasn’t really increased that much from what I’ve seen, exception being red meat as I have noticed that has crept up over the last year or so.

If you like jam or marmalade on your brekkie toast/croissants, take some with you as it's a bit on the expensive side en Francais !

I would say supermarche prices are similar to major uk supermarkets but the quality of products is far better.

On thé other hand there is a wider variety of flavours and the quality is excellent .., but then the food is one of the reasons we love travelling

Try the website for Carrefour France.....

Searchable for every imaginable product. Will help you brush up on your French language skills as well.

Enjoy.

Amazing tinned ratatouille … going to bring that back next time I go …
My favourite is the shredded carrots. I usually bring back some jars of it home with me!

We found slightly higher prices
(It depends on the £/€ exchange rate)
But noticeably better quality and a wider range of goods.

As your from Yorkshire, I expect that the French will be hearing a lot of "How much" while you are shopping. :giggle:
Hahaha, probably hear it from the hubby. God...... trying to get him to part with money is an art form in itself.

Apart from when he has an epiphany and decides to buy a PVC 🤣

I found meat a lot more expensive than at home. But better quality. They also do a mince for spaghetti bolognese that is lovely. I'm not sure what herbs and spices they put in. Used Lidl most of the time. Most expensive supermarket was Casino. Which was our only choice in Alp Dhuez.

A friend of mine has a house in Spain and one in France, doing 6 months in each..... he has just cut short his time in France and gone back to Spain due to the very expensive costs there....... don't have any specifics, but, he just said its now extortionate !!!!!
