Hi All,

The highlight of the year for my wife and I is our annual trip to Glasto. It was these trips that got us into Motorhoming (via hired and borrowed vans) and, now we have one, we were really looking forward to taking it there.

We've been very lucky over the years and hadn't missed one until last year, and sadly have doubled up by missing again this year. We'll try for the resale in April but this is a long shot so, to dull our disappointment, we're looking for other alternatives.

We live in Nottingham and it'd be nice, but not essential, for the drive not to be too long. We'd be looking for festivals which usually have a strong line up and ideally some of the Glasto laid back vibe.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

Thanks

Chris

I can't help with your question but there are so many festivals during the summer now I don't think you'll find it difficult to get to an alternative festival.

We can highly recommend Lakefest which is at Eastnor Castle Deer Park Herefordshire 13th to 16th August 2020. We have been going for a few years, and they have had some decent acts for a medium sized festival. We have already booked tickets for next year although the live-in pitches aren't released yet and nor is the line-up - but we think it is good value at around £110 ish each for 3 nights entertainment and camping in what is a lovely area. You can also book the Thursday night as an extra night for about £10 too I believe. I think some early bird tickets and the first act(s) are being released this week-end. Very family friendly atmosphere - not as big as Glasto obviously but enough to keep you busy for a week-end and there is Ledbury and Malvern nearby if you want to nip out for a visit elsewhere, plus the Castle itself (usually get a discount with Lakefest tickets). We actually only live about 15 minutes away and when we were under canvas we used to nip home for showers/a decent bed if the weather wasn't good but now we have another moho that is less of a concern.

We'd say Glastonbudget in Leics, end of May. All tribute acts but very good fun. About half the price of the real Glasto.

Then Upton Blues Festival (not just blues, a few rock acts as well) July 17th weekend about £40 each for the weekend camping, all the acts are free after that. We always have a great time there.

What sort of bands play at this festival, can't find much info.

Beautiful Days festival near Exeter is very good but quite some distance for you to travel.

The Big Feastival is a very chilled festival. Usually has some good bands on. I have worked at it for the last three years and it’s been very laidback. Being a foodie event there is plenty of different good quality food to be had.
It is held on Alex James’s farm near Chipping Norton. August bank holiday weekend. There is a motorhome/ caravan camping area with hookup etc.

My cousin loves Rewind, and we’ve really enjoyed WOMAD in the past. I’m not sure if it’s still going though, tend to go abroad now.

I've never been to glasto but used to do big chill festival when it was still on but really enjoyed the smaller vibe of Beat herder festival. I only made it up there once a good few years ago now but loved the atmosphere and setting there.

What festivals do you do abroad? We're looking to catch a European festival next year. Which I've never done.

Agreed it's a good festival and very friendly. However although they have good bands there is never that many of them.

We've done Latitude, in Suffolk, the last 2 years and that has several stages and lots of good bands and also a comedy stage which usually gets a bunch of TV comedians so you can have a rest between top class bands. Don't normally book until the headline acts are announced but it's likely we will go again in 2020.

Bearded Theory , not far from you at Catton Hall , near to The National Arboretum.
Really good gig , and this years line up looks particularly good.
It's May bank Holiday weekend.
No where near as big as Glastonbury , but I prefer it as you're not having to walk for ages back to your van.

Isle of Wight was my favourite but it is a few years since I have been. They used to have acts that rivalled Glasto.

sorry to hear you didnt get tickets- dont give up the resales sometimes do come through. We were SO miserable the year we didnt get tickets...
Alternative festivals are many and VERY different. You cant take your own drink into arenas at most ; and lots of them have very few stalls. We took Grandkids Truckfest Oxfordshire last year - a very different vibe but lovely. Good bands- nothing on until mid day { a lie IN !} no hill of death. Kids loved it - line up not yet announced but smashing site and reasonably priced; small festival few queues flat pitches [but dont go for the field with showers s they apparently didnt work ..]
Download is ALWAYS a mud fast and restricted music genre - but very friendly [not my thing- second hand info]
Friend took her daughter to Bennicassim - it was v v hot and bands were on at night [she didnt realise - siesta in the day... but the lassie liked it.
Rock Werchter was good apparently but eye wateringly expensive imo....
Fingers crossed for resale ? Glastonbury is like no other xx
See you in the fieldsxx

Paleo is our local event, saw the Who there a few years back. Last year 21 Pilots, Christine and the Queens plus the Cure were our headliners, Céline Dion next year apparently.

Then we have the Montreux Jazz Festival which is anything but just Jazz, Elton John, Van the Man in recent years plus tons of others.

Really calm relaxed events with well behaved people, a pleasure to take the children too, and Paleo has a great campsite attached that opens about 2wks before the event.

200,000 people and not a drop of litter is evident the day afterwards (litter trolls come down from the Alps it seems :D2)

Bearded Theory is near to you. We've been for the past couple of years. It has a very friendly vibe, and is very much a non-commercial festival, so they don't have to take sponsorship and make a great profit: there are no restrictions on bringing in and drinking your own booze at the stages, for example, although there are bars there at normal pub prices too, serving very decent stuff. It usually has a decent and varied line-up with some pretty big names. The line-up tends to get firmed up towards the end of the year -- some have already been signed up. Size-wise it was about 13,000 last year, I think, (they reduced the numbers a bit to improve the experience) -- so a lot smaller than Glasto.

It's in May, though, so early in the season (starts May 21 next year). We had great weather this year -- not so much the previous. Then again we got soaked and covered in mud at Beautiful Days in August, so you always takes your pick with the good old British weather!

Beautiful Days is very similar in size and general vibe with a similar quality of line-up. We went there for the first time this year, although we decided we preferred Bearded Theory. And Devon is a bit of a schlepp for us (and you).

I see hymerman already mentioned it!

Yeah. Thanks. We're trying to put a brave face on it but we're gutted...

Thanks everyone. We're hoping to get away in August for a long trip (probably the North Coast 500) so a few of those would clash.

Having looked at all of those, we're thinking maybe Bearded Theory and Latitude - leaving a hopeful gap in case we get lucky with the second issue of Glastonbury tickets...

Just been having a look at the European festivals and wondering about Sziget or Roskilde. I can#'t see anything about motorhome camping from their websites. Does anyone here know whether that's possible at either?

Try the Wirral Folk Festival 4th-7th. June 2020 headline act Lindisfarne. All on one site and under cover nice showers and toilets and extra water points. The club house has excellent bars and restaurant.
Easy to get to from the M53.
Just put Wirral Folk Festival in your search engine for further details.
Early bird tickets before 1st. March

Yes, we always enjoy the Upton Blues festival and it's not strictly blues, so you get a bit of variety. ?
