80 is creeping up very fast, when I get to that age I will lose my Lloyds free insurance. What would the best health/travel insurance to get. We are normally away for 2 to 3 months at a time.

We just don't plan to go anywhere. As I understand it the insurance costs as much as the holiday. We would still like to go on a cruise to Norway so I might investigate when we are allowed out but we have had lots of lovely holidays so might have to be content with that.

It’s not just dying that you need to think about, seriously ill, accident, anything that requires repatriation and you can be looking at 6 figures. Would you want your family to have to pick up that sort of bill.

It’s a good point - If travel insurance becomes prohibitively expensive, I wonder if insurers would start to offer non-repat cover? I assume the repatriation is the big fear - other medical issues would be covered by the reciprocal NHS arrangements ?
If the choice was to not be able to go away at all or go away without repatriation cover, I think I’d take the risk and tell my family that if the worst happened.... to bury me happy in a foreign field that will forever be England ?

I don’t think any of us can answer that, even the insurance companies at the moment. COVID19 is going to have a big impact on travel insurance and none of it good I would imagine. I certainly wouldn’t want to travel without it being covered and we’ve no idea if we will have reciprocal arrangements next year in other EU countries or have I missed something?

They’re negotiating future arrangements at the moment for post Dec 2020. I’d be surprised if they don’t agree something mutually beneficial, given London is something like France’s 7th biggest city, if you take populations as a measure.

It will be interesting to see what effect Covid has ... given the airlines seem to all be going bankrupt, I suspect it means long (and medium) haul travel is going to take a very long time to recover, if at all.
If I ran a travel insurance business, I’d be very concerned at where my future revenue was going to come from.... and perhaps expecting carnage in the market as those companies left, fight for the business of the few travellers left .... ???

rather irresponsible not to, isn't it.
wouldn't want the kids to have to cart me back if i kicked the bucket abroard ;)
When you see the prices quoted for over 80's travel insurance, it may not look so irresponsible.
Lots of people "self insure"

I suppose it all depends if you have any underlying health conditions as to how much it will cost you. Also where in the world you want to travel. And of course how long you want to stay at your destination

For years my wife and I have had an annual world wide travel insurance plan with AXA . It covers worldwide travel with 180 maximum number of days away each year . I am 74 and my wife is 67 we are both fortunate in that neither of us have any health issues, although ironically last year in Bali I was treated for bronchitis and dehydration that incurred medical fees of £900 [ I collapsed in the dining room and was taken to hospital by ambulance].. Last year our premium was £484 this year it had risen to £624 . I haven't renewed as we do not take our PVC abroad and the only foreign holiday booked for this year is two weeks in August at our timeshare in Tenerife which is unlikely to happen . I think the days of cheap flights / long haul holidays are over . Our 16 night three resort holiday in Bali last year cost £2,600 including flights for the two of us booked with Secret Escapes who I certainly recommend. The thought of anyone contemplating travelling abroad without insurance fills me with horror . Until a vaccine is found for Covid 19 I suspect many insurers will not provide cover , certainly AXA told me they were temporarily suspending issuing new travel insurance policies.

"Chinese Virus", not with standing. For years now the Insurance industry has been fleecing otherwise healthy people PURELY as result of AGE. It is not just Insurance, AGEISM is endemic throughout UK Business and is a factor in the way the Government deals too ie; 70 years = medical to retain driving licence (C1). IF we where a "Minority" it would be ILLEGAL.

Save the expense of health insurance,
Enjoy the four wonderful countries of Great Britain,
as a bonus you will be spending your holiday money
to support our own businesses, and countrymen,
we all speak the same language with interesting different accents
and when this Covid19 pandemic is under control,
GB will need to recover, so let us all look after ourselves first.

I agree with staying over here to a point but one of the main reasons for going abroad is the facilities you get and the cost is a third to half the price that caravan club c c c charge and a lot of greedy private sit owners charge

I'm not sure how many on this Forum will share that view as their aim appears to be spend the bare minimum in this country .

Hi.
Crems abroad....... Bring the Ashes back ( Grit out of a burst water filter ? if searched. ),scatter them where you will. Heaven forbid either or both of us die, but, we want to be scattered together eventually on a quiet south faceing bank at a very much loved holiday walk, and watch the world go by season by season. Sorted.

I can't disagree with that but after caravaning & Motorhoming for 55 yrs We have noticed that where ever you go but there are a lot of us would love to stay here if the cost of was a lot more reasonable

Do you need insurance?

For a time after my Dad had a hip replacement his insurance costs rocketed, so he made the choice to travel without insurance, most of the time it was fine but he did agree to do us the curtesy of dying rather than being ill and generating huge bills. (I'm not sure he had thought that one through)

On a brighter note he did neither whilst travelling uninsured.

However when he was ill away (pain not life threatening before the hip replacement) and fully insured. Mother called her private emergency service and I was on the next plane out to bring both them and the van home.

I have still not forgotten the kindness of all the staff on arrival at the docks ( DFDS) as the van was booked on a freight boat 6 weeks later. Sent to the 'standby lane' as we arrived 20 minutes before a boat was due to depart. Then after a discussion with the loading team was moved out of that lane and put in a 'holding area'

We were the first 'standyby' to be loaded but I was very happy when the rally team with a car and trailer arrived in the restaurant. As they had said we could have their space.

Later my mother commented that she how much pain father was in as he never said a word when the speedo was well over 70mph. (Probably the only time that van had experienced that speed and above)

Not that the story is relevant to the original post but the kindness of those who helped has never been forgotten.

No need ..They have cemeteries and crems abroad.BUSBY.
Yes, even in Greece. They were the last EU country to build a crematorium, I believe they have another built in Patras. Why have your body flown home when you can get cremated for a fraction of the cost abroad. It's a no brainer

given London is something like France’s 7th biggest city,
4th & the French who are in the UK aren't tourists so have no need of insurance or EHIC as they would be working,& so entitled to full health care , or spouses/children of workers & have full eligibility as well. It is only tourists that need some form of cover.

If the beloved Boris and Dom get their way the "reciprocal NHS arrangement" will not be available after year end.
