Does anyone get this done ??
3 years up and down steep hills in Marocco
made me think it may be prudent,
BUT it looks a pig of a job, as there is no level plug or easy filler hole through which you can put the 3.9 litres of fresh oil into the box.
Mitch.

Depends which gearbox?

Many modern auto boxes are sealed and the oil is for the life of the box?

I had it done when my van was in trusted garage for work. 21year old hymer Mercedes sprinter based. Preventative maintenance. I got a full service full fluid change and gearbox oil change also. Full new exhaust also. With full lanoguard treatment.
Was looking for another van. But decided in the end to stay with. What I had as the quality of vans I was looking was very poor build quality.

Done mine a few time. Drain it via drain, then poor measured amount in through breather on the top. Very simple. Longest part of the job is removing the under tray, but I do it whilst servicing anyway.

I changed the gearbox oil in our 2013 Peugeot Boxer X250 to Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 fully synthetic and added 10% of Activ8 friction reducer and the gear change is as smooth as silk now.

I did our 2014 X250 (6 speed manual) when it had about 24k on it just because I didn’t know what was in there and I’d like to be sure it has the right amount of the best oil for peace of mind.
A very simple job once you’ve identified the location of the filler point (breather). I could fill it by feel with a rubber tube and a funnel now I know where it is.
I won’t be doing it again unless we get up to 80/100k as I don’t think it’s necessary.
Mine had some slight fuzziness of metal on the magnet, I assume from the running in process.
I used 2.9 litres of Petronas Tutela Matryx fully synthetic, 2.7 came out.

Did ours a couple of weeks ago. 30,000 miles 2.2 puma in a 2016 Peugeot.
It was very dirty. I expected cleanish. 2.5l came out (no leaks, possible underfilled at factory) 2.9 l back in.
£45 for the oil. 1 hour job. Easier to remove air cleaner for access to breather to refill.

Anyone doing their own oil changes of gearbox or diff oil, always undo the filler plug first, before you remove the drain plug. The last thing you want is a seized filler plug or a rounded off one that you can't remove after you've drained the contents !

Fitted a drain plug, so easily drained, but yes good advice…

My van is booked in for it and the diff. to be done next week. Based on a merc sprinter .
I've never understood how it's possible for the manufacturers can say ' sealed for life '.
I wonder what the legal interpretation of that statement 'sealed for life ' actually is . Just how long are they assuming that the van will last for and could you claim against them if the gearbox failed.
There must be so much swarf in there due to all the grinding etc of the gears.
Anyway ,relative small cost could prevent a huge problem.

Please don't believe the manufacturers 'sealed for life'. It's just there to reduce fleet running costs. I've always had the autobox fluid changed every 50k in my cars. My old MB E class estate achieved 350k miles in 10 years. The autobox was still as smooth as on day 1. Sadly, although the mechanicals were excellent, the body rusted like Fiats and Alfas used to . My colleague believed 'sealed for life'. He needed replacement autobox in his MB estate at 180k.

Phoned my local Fiat Professional asking for it to be done. They couldn' understand why i wanted it done. Not necessary they told me . However they did suggest a clutch fluid change. Have since read its adviseable to have gearbox change every 10 years.

Mine is 11 years old and done 52,000 miles
So I (yes ME). I decide when I want something done and I am paying !!!🤬
Booked next week £200..
Yes it’s dear and yes I COULD do it, but at 78 do I want to ?
NO !!

I have gear oil changed every second year on my 2002 Boxer and brake fluid changed the other year..My local garage does it.BUSBY.

On FWD manuals the gearbox oil normally gets changed when the driveshafts are removed to do the clutch so a service life of 100k-150k is OK with me..

Its a shame i dont live closer. I would do it for you. The oil is £45 (manual box) and it takes a hour.

Had a gearbox oil change done on our 2014 Boxer not long after we bought it.
The gear selection is noticeably improved and I've convinced myself it runs better now - quieter would be an exaggeration but maybe smoother.

Lovely sentiment thank you 👍
Been a vehicle tech for nearly 50 years
so it’s annoying but it’s also an unwillingness to lie around under my van in the garden. So it’s self inflicted really.

I'll be doing mine, had the oil delivered this morning. The van is 33 years old, and although the mileage is only at 70k, I've no idea if it's ever been done, so it seams sensible.

G/Box oil change done.
Garage found the oil seal leaking on the drive shaft at the G/Box so renewed it. They also
renewed a Track Rod end. I told them to put the whole 3litres in. Also had a new Air Filter (Moroccan sandstorm experience)
Now happy and ready for 4 or 5 weeks in central France.
PS. Gear change like silk 😊
Mitch
