Just bought a twin 11kg gaslow system from a fellow funster.
At the moment I have 2x calor gas bottles fitted in an autotrail Dakota.
How much work is involved in fitting the fillable system. It comes complete with all pipe work and filler connections and auto change valve.
I’m not in the higher echelons of diyers, or even the middle level, but game for a laugh, but obviously very aware it’s gas I’m messing with.

Living the dream.
It will involve quite a bit of fettling and possibly drilling your moho to accept the fill valve.
You might be lucky to get a funster living near you to help or any gas registered plumber will do it for you. I’ve fitted two systems with the help of my plumber son.

Hardest part is deciding where to put filler which you need a hole saw cutter for

It is certainly mind focussing, a tool that looks like you are making the second channel tunnel and you are approaching your MH with it.

Measure twice, drill once.

There is good guidance on the Gaslow site on where to mount the filler though personally I would not entertain through the door on the basis of the pipe being regularly flexed.

If drilling in a plastic skirt or similar you need to reinforce it bit of 3mm aluminium or something

It's a relatively simple matter of re-plumbing, then testing all joints with soapy water. The filler could go on a bracket within the locker (£10-15) which is what I did, twice. I'd check the local filling places to see if they are sensitive to that kind of thing, or not. fitting the filler in the locker means you don't have to drill a hole through the side and you could remove it all without (much) trace when you change vans.
If you don't feel confident, get someone who's done it before (and still alive) to help.

It isn't difficult but you will need a cutter and drill yo fit fill point unless Teresa a spot on tow bar or elsewhere accesable

:)
Thank you all.
I will take a step back and plan carefully, but it will be done safely, with professional help if I’m doubtful.

I’ll give you a hand if you want.
Would be easier if you come to me.
I won’t charge for the electric we use :)
We can fit the filler inside the cabinet if your happy to open at each fill up, that’s how mines done (y)

@Minxy Girl will be along in a min I’m sure ;)

She knows how to do it. Also you do NOT need to drill any holes in the bodywork ( certainly not big ones anyway)

I used the flush filler that she suggests and it is a doddle (y)

Just fitted a refillable to a mates Comanche and put the filler in the skirt just at the left of the gas locker door,
After drilling the hole I found that there is an overlap from the front corner moulding and you need to cut that back about 10 mm from the skirting hole as the filler cap fitting screws are not long enough to go through the extra thickness.
But one done it all fits neatly and handy for filling as it is next to diesel filler.(y)(y)(y)

Another vote for internal filler in gas locker, means you can transfer to new van without leaving obsolete filler point.

Geoff, it's basically a spanner job, there is no 'gas fitting ' skills required.. however.. even tightening a gas fitting correctly requires a modicum of mechanical skill, over-tighten and you can split the nut, too slack and it will leak..

After fitting it has to be leak tested.. the only way a DIYer can do this is to fill with LPG.. The pipe connections are then checked for leaks.. you can buy the correct Leak Testing fluid from the likes of Screwfix, it's non corrosive and much better than soapy water .. only costs a couple of quid. If there are any bubbles, nip up the nut and test again.. but don't over tighten.. and DON'T be tempted to use PTFE tape on the thread.. that is a no no . the gas tight seal is brass to brass on the seat of the fitting, not on the thread.

if you are not happy with this, it's only an hours work for a dealer.. certainly no more than £100 to fit .. don't risk it..

Choice of Filling Point Location.

  • fitting in the locker floor between the bottles is the easier way, but you can be stopped from filling by the attendant if they see you opening the locker to fill.. may never happen..but if it does, you go to the next filling station
  • fitting on the door is Not advisable .. constant flexing of the filling hose can lead to premature failure .. this could be nasty as it would be under high pressure when filling.. a sudden split and liquid LPG escaping could be catastrophic ...
  • fitting on the skirt is fairly easy but may need a brace to keep the skirt from flexing when the gun is pushed on.. this may cost extra if a dealer is doing it.
  • Some gas lockers have space on the wall for fitting the filler..
I fitted my own Gaslow system, filler is on skirt with an aluminium angle brace to the chassis rail

Best to have a mooch round the web for the best prices for the extra bits as they do vary enormously.

Thank you all.
Your advice is greatly appreciated, and will be acted on.
@Boater demonstrated the kit yesterday, and even I’m capable of screwing the bits together, as @scotjimland said it’s a spanner job and no difference to fitting a new calor bottle.
I’m going to take @Silver-Fox kind offer re the filler point, and ask him to give me a hand. Tis not far to his abode.
Much appreciate everybody’s help.
Geoff.

if your filler hose is the heavey rubber type and you going for an external fill point i found it best to fit the hose and let it find its own location then fit the filler point trying to work back from the filler can be difficult

Everything is stainless piping, and quite light and flexible.

Done!
Rich, @Silver-Fox didn't. give me a hand to fit as I originally thought, he did the lot, after a lot of driving about and searching for a missing fitting. (I thought I had it all).
Fitted all perfectly, very many thanks to Rich also Mrs Fox: aka Pen for drinkie poos and sausage roll.
