Forgive me for making such a controversial first post, but I have been a long time lurker here and have found the gas debate very interesting. I am very concerned about this and my partner even more so. I am hovering in the non believers area but I do wonder if this is just wishful thinking. So is it possible to have a sensible vote on the issue without all of the hysteria, I am sure it is, so here is my poll;
 
I know the "experts" say not but they have been proven wrong in the past, many times. I have come to the view that too many people are convinced this has happened to them that it does no harm to take precautions. Also I do not believe that they are all wrong, there are too many for them not to be taken seriously.
 
If gas attacks were common place, you would not see so many trucks parked in lay byes overnight, while the Driver had his rest, often with goods which can easily be resold.

My position on this subject is a 99% belief that they do not happen
However there is still the remaining 1% of uncertainty
I choose to remain sceptical but vigilant

Perhaps so, but I don't see what choice they have, there are very few 'secure' truck stops.

Surely this lends weight to the argument that gas attacks are an urban myth.

If they did happen, you can be sure someone would have seen the commercial advantage in offering secure truck (and camper) stops.

The fact that there aren't any testifies to the lack of need for them.

We were protecting some trucks a few years ago, each truck had millions of pounds worth of inkjet cartridges, I think each pallet had a retail value of £50,000, these items are easily sold at car boot sales and a couple of truckers lost their loads in robberies. I am sure that many lorries are running around with even more valuable loads. And whilst these very valuable loads will probably have two drivers (as the above did) so that they do not have to park overnight in a layby, many that do park up in the middle of nowhere will have much richer pickings than the average motorhome.

However, if it were easy to render the driver unconscious, I think these blaggers would learn the tricks in the criminal university (prison) and it would be widespread. I further surmise that this skill would be used in a whole host of robbery and rape situations long before anyone thought it viable to gas a motorhomer and nick his camera.
 
Very controversial subject, and one that has provoked some extreme reactions on the forums.

Everyone has the right to question and believe what they do on the evidence they have.

I am keeping an open mind on the subject as proof either way has yet to be sufficient for me to make a decision.

I'm sure this debate will go on and on with people voicing their own opinions and quite rightly so.

Please Just don't let this get personal?:thumb:

:Cool: But a £2000 Laptop, £4000 and 5000 Euros in cash, £20,000 of Jewellery plus credit cards etc are much easier to carry away. :Rofl1:
 
Having given serious and rational thought to the possibility of gas attacks I’m with te experts on this im afraid, given that no conclusive proof excists of such an attack I was left wondering, what if anything is happening to these people who claim to have been victims.
The first and most likely is people sleep far more sound than they think, I except there are some who claim to be very light sleepers and wake at the sound of a pin drop, and that’s fine subject to one very important oeice of criteria, IF they hear the pin drop, if they don’t, they don’t wake ,simple, even light sleepers have moments lasting up to possibly and hour or more of very deep sleep that they are not aware of and during this period if robbed would claim to have heard nothing, and as they sleep so light it must have been gas.

One interesting question I came up with is, what were folk doing in the early evening prior to the robbery? may i dare to suggest they may have been drinking? Possibly but no one drinks to the point of unconsousnes or do they?
One possible scenario worthy of consideration is,
You meet up withal kinds of people at meets aeirs and campsites, very many total strangers, and you socialise with them , but!!

What if their motive is, and always was robbery of the new found friends,
Picture this.
You are happily enjoying a drink often their drink and your in the company of say two or three other couples, you feel safe and the wine is flowing, you are taking care because you are driving next day, what you did’nt know was the motive of your new friends and during the evening they had been adding to your beverage ,be it tea coffee or wine, there are many easey to obtain drugs out there that are both odourless and tasteless, Rohypnol (Date Rape Drug) as an example as the evening draws on you get tired and its bedtime, you wake up next day , minus all your valuables so do others in your group, non of you heard anything, your all feeling a bit groggy even Bertha who as on tea all night, It must be gas you all cry and even the Police support your views and you remember nothing of any disturbance, the robbers amongst you will of course claim to have been robbed also thereby throwing any susspision away from the group.
All of the above is of course pure fantasy but far more believable than a Gas attack in my humble opinion

Rohypnol use has been reported on every inhabited continent. It is often used in conjunction with other drugs. It is usually ingested orally, but can be snorted. Teen use of Rohypnol is increasing. The most common pattern of use is by teenagers and young adults as an alcohol extender in an attempt to create a dramatic "high" most often in combination with beer, or as a drug to incapacitate a victim before a sexual assault. ​
Why has there been an increase in teen use of Rohypnol?

First, Rohypnol is a low-cost drug, sold at less than £2 per tablet. Second, common misconceptions may explain the drug's popularity with young people: 1) many erroneously believe that the drug is unadulterated because it comes in pre-sealed bubble packs -- and therefore tamper-proof and safe; 2) many mistakenly think its use cannot be detected by urinalysis testing. ​

What are the side effects?

Rohypnol intoxication is generally associated with impaired judgment and impaired motor skills and can make a victim unable to resist a sexual attack. The combination of alcohol and Rohypnol is also particularly hazardous because together, their effects on memory and judgment are greater than the effects resulting from either taken alone. Effects begin within thirty minutes, peak within two hours, and can persist for up to eight hours. It is commonly reported that persons who become intoxicated on a combination of alcohol and flunitrazepam have "blackouts" lasting eight to twenty-four hours following ingestion. Disinhibition (losing your social inhibitions) is another widely reported effect of Rohypnol, when taken alone or in combination with alcohol. Adverse effects of Rohypnol use include, decreased blood pressure, memory impairment, drowsiness, visual disturbances, dizzenes confusion, gastrointestinal disturbances and urinary retention.

I'm leaning very heavily towards the experts on this. I know you can't prove a positive with a negative but exactly how many people have been convicted of a theft where gassing was used? I've never heard of anyone being found in possession of gassing equipment. I'm sure I read not long ago where someone was convicted "of going with equipment to perform a crime" or words to that effect. In that case it was a crowbar but surely the same would apply to a bottle of anaesthetic gas?

Anaesthetists say it's virtually impossible to do, especially without monitoring the victim. So a crook with no training, no knowledge of how many are inside, how high off the floor or how air tight the van is can drug the inhabitants without killing them?

I'm also aware that at least one member of the forums felt sufficiently strongly that he resigned. On the other hand I know 3 vehicles were broken into while staying in Bel Parc near Calais. In their opinion, tiredness and wine were the real reason for them sleeping through the theft.

Gassing

It's absolutely staggering that with the following facts, there are still some people who choose to believe that gassing exists. And of course Elvis is still alive and Princess Diana was killed by the Duke of Edinburgh!

There is not one documented case of a robber being convicted of carrying gassing equipment.

There is not one recorded death from so-called 'gassing'.

There is not one recorded case of a proven gas attack.

The Royal College of Anaesthetists has totally debunked it. But of course we shouldn't listen to 'experts' should we? Oh no, far better to listen to some thick tourist who's gone to bed with a skinful of wine, been robbed and then decides that gassing will make a better story for the insurers!

The only documented case of anyone trying to subdue people by inserting gas into their environment was the Moscow theatre siege when, using the latest and most sophisticated substances available, the Russian authorities managed to kill dozens of people.

Gassing in a motorhome is impossible. The correct amount to sedate an adult would kill a child. An overdose would kill an adult. The equipment necessary would be enormous and why would robbers, with such sophistication, bother gassing motorhomes with all of their air vents where the gas would simply dissipate before it could knock anyone out? Surely they'd go for a target with some real wealth in it, so it's really funny that we've never heard of anyone gassing rich people in their homes.

Consider that anaethetism is so complex that dentists for instance are no longer allowed to give a general anaesthetic because people have died in the chair. Keeping a patient in that state where he is deep in sleep but doesn't stop breathing is incredibly skillfull and requires years of medical training by people who are already amongst the brightest in the country. But of course thick Albanian robbers can immediately get hold of some equipment and successfully gas motorhomers without a single tragedy!

It's a shame that some people are so willing to condemn 'experts' and believe this nonsense. In fact it's not a shame, it's downright sad!

For God's sake, think for five minutes and put this entire gassing subject where it belongs, in the rubbish bin!

Edited to add - there are hundreds of cases of people being robbed whilst they sleep at home. It's funny that they never claim to have been gassed! Why cannot we accept that it's perfectly possible to have the same experience in a motorhome. A long drive, a meal, a glass of wine and you can sleep like a log!

Truckers aren't blamed for everything, I am sure there are one or two things that can't be pinned on them:Smile:

I don't think they gas themselves, but then maybe some can't help it after their third all day breakfast of the day:Laughing: Some crooked ones have might have used gas as an excuse for losing a load:BigGrin: Plenty have been found guilty of setting up there own load to be stolen. Some do carve cars up.... But I reckon that the vast majority that pull into Leigh Delamare Services pee on the car park. Lazy Truckers:Laughing::Laughing:

Well, I have a theory , it must be a Man thing, territorial marking .. believe this or not, I have witnessed men walking out of the pub, PAST the Gents toilet and peeing in the car park.. I am not kidding, one actually peed up against the RV wheel.. :Angry::Angry::Angry:
 
:Cool: We are expecting a Gas attack tonight. Our Dutch friends visited us today. So Sandy cooked up some Steak Pies (home made of course), Some Roasty Potatoes, Mushy Peas and lovely Beef Gravy. :Wink:
