Fuel price discrepancy

We have a 20p difference here.

We noticed, while touring France last month, that independent fuel stations were often cheaper than the major supermarkets.

Independents about us have been cheaper than supermarkets for a while
Petrol £1.49 ind £1.55 Asda
Local ESSO you can use Nectar points for 5p/litre extra off
(we keep them for filling the van)

Is it profiteering by some or not making a reasonable profit for others or maybe the supermarkets usually cross subsidise from shopping to get people in and can't anymore as margins are tight?. Whatever way the price boards are usually huge and clear so it's up to the punter where they choose to fill it shows a healthy market as they're not all charging the same.

Why, have they turned them back on again? Sainsbury's had them all turned off when I was over? You had to drive in & out to find out price.

No,it just shows that the one with the higher price is making an additional 18p/litre over & above what the cheaper one is selling at.

My local Tesco also has had the outdoor approach illuminated price signs turned off for several weeks.

Re price differentials........
I think some will trim their prices to attract Christmas shoppers to go into their store.

Apparently the supermarkets and larger chains often have deals set up well in advance to get fuel at particular prices. However a small independent may buy their fuel by the tankerful on the day they need more at whatever price is available on that day.

That means that when prices are rising, independent prices may well go up first, since they are not protected by longer term contracts. On the other hand when prices come down they may be the first to get fuel at lower prices and be keen to pass it on to boost sales.

Cheers, Robin

Yesterday Petrol £1.63 in Northampton £144.9 Ulceby Cross (Lincs)
18p difference?
Ulceby Cross (and Partney - same owner) are always much cheaper than most other places locally. Problem is that they often have queues blocking traffic on the nearby roundabouts!

It’s similar gaps down here. Diesel 1.73 in an independent and between 184 and 1.89 in the others including Tesco
Where is it that price please not showing up on my fuel app

I paid £1.77 for diesel today at an independent garage, and Morrisons in Banbury was £180.9.

At this time of year I don't use enough fuel to bother looking at the price.

Yes, plus people need to consider the realities of the market…. Hedged supplies locks in prices which does not always work and independents can sometimes get a good deal. As always, supply and demand dictates the overall market direction

I wonder if todays news of The G7 restricting oil price to 60 Dollars(£48.00) a Barrel, will help bring the price of fuel at the pumps down?
If so will Gas electric come down also, as electric is governed by the wholesale oil price after all?
Yea! gone on Putin, Pull your hair out We dont want you oil!, and as for India & China buying Russian Oil, Bloody Shame on them, Ukrainian Blood on their hands.

His price seems to change with every delivery and there were loads fuelling up the day I went in.
So perhaps his last delivery was dearer

On Friday here it was petrol at £152.9 and diesel £184.9, and that's with the 5ppl remote-locations discount.

I totally agree. I think it it much easier for companies to make significantly higher profits these days. I am not sure why supermarkets seem to be the worst offenders 🤔
Best thing we can do is shop around IMHO.

Yes but they're only ever visible from the opposite direction or next turning on the roundabout after you gone straight on.

Same with our local independent - they aren't tied down by fixed contracts and can bag a good deal on delivery. Sometimes not, though

Subsidising shopping! I don't think any of the big supermarkets need to subsidise their shopping parts of their business, some of the discount supermarkets seem selling some branded goods for less than the big supermarkets and still making some profit on them, I hope they don't all think we have the same thoughts or they'll be hiking their prices even higher.. Just sayin....

Whilst we have some differences in the price of petrol locally, what concerns me is the "loading" of diesel. I came back from France/Belgium 5 days ago and diesel there is just 4-6c a litre more than petrol. The UK has some questions to answer!
