Our firdge struggled in the hot weather recently. Having looked online the common solution seems to be to fir a single or double fan near the vent to cool it. Has anyone done this? Can you recommend which fan to buy?

Yes, Maplins will sell you a cheap fan,i used one from a computer and wired it direct to a small cheap solar panel on the roof.
It only works when the sun is shining which is what you want.
The whole setup cost about ÂŁ20 and works perfectly.

I used a pair of 12v computer fans and wired them via a small push switch to the 12v fridge supply .. I mounted inside the top vent using perforated ally strip.

I had a plan to fit a small thermostat but in the end never bothered ..

Have a look, there should be a top air flow deflector plate , (a curved piece of aluminium which helps air flow) ... some installers don't fit them, also make sure fans are exhausting ..
