Are you a fresh water filler as you leave or as you arrive at a site?

I am amazed at the number of Motorhomes especially hire vans that fill up their tank as they leave the camp site seems daft to me driving around with full tanks and the effect it must have on fuel consumption šŸ§

We leave home or sites with a full tank, 65ltrs. It dosnt make a noticeable difference to the fuel consumption. Also if we decide to stop of grid we are always ready and need facilities.
Maybe if we had a much bigger tank, 80ltrs, that might make a difference.

Depends what sort of camping you intend to do, if you were going to do some wild camping then yes definitely fill up with water and empty cassette.

We always fill up before leaving as we donā€™t know where weā€™ll be that evening. Maybe on a site but more likely not, maybe a pub stop, maybe just a place to stay the night with nothing there.
How do those that donā€™t have water go on for showers, brews, cooking etc?
I really cannot see a reason to go without water.

The only real reason not to travel full would relate to the plated weight criteria. Thereafter very much personal choice.

Depends where we are going. If we know there will be water available, just put enough in for flushing the loo, hand washing, etc plus separate 5L bottle for brews. If wild camping in UK, fill up and top up whenever possible; in Europe, except in winter, fill up on arrival.

My van is plated at 5000kg. Running order we are usually at 4500kg with a full 100ltr fresh water. If you do the maths it must work out to such a piddling amount of difference to the MPG..
I can understand it with vans that have reduced payloads but that would be more about staying legal than saving a few pennies.

Already hundreds of posts on here on this frequent topic with the same opinions being regurgitated over and over.
It's a matter of personal choice, plus whether you expect find a water supply at your next stop.
I'm not in the the slightest concerned about a drop of a couple of mpg but I am about having a supply of water for my morning cuppa and shower.

Same here, what's the point of having the fresh tank and not use it,
Also we empty the grey and toilet tanks when ever the opportunity is available.
That way we get the best use from the MH,
But we are all different with differing views on everything, so just do whatever suits you best :giggle:

Always fill with fresh and empty grey before leaving if possible, like to arrive so just have to park and get beer out.
We are always as far as possible, full, empty grey and cassette when leaving anywhere.
Also have four full 25 litre drums under the seat in case we run out.
At a push we can manage without electric and gas for at least a week, but without water you are stuffed in a day.

I remember the advice I received, many moons ago, to always dump what should be dumped and fill what should be filled at every opportunity.
You never know what the facilities will be like at the next stop, particularly if, like us, you rarely use 'proper' sites.

Richard.

And just to pvove a point just stopped on an Aire and services out of order even the drains are chocker block with leaves.

I tend to have 30ltrs freshwater and empty grey on leaving home or site, thatā€™s enough for toilet flushing and brews. But Not wild camped yet so would probable fill the f/water if I was going to.

Always full. Water is liquid gold to us.

Its been covered here many times - the effect on fuel consumption isn't worth thinking about for us.

I always drain all the tanks when parking back in our storage place.
No water available at our storage place, so I always leave empty.

I load water when needed, if I don't know the first place then I'll load in a fuel station or at home.
I've loaded water in a few odd places such as a cemetery, round the back of a supermarket, riding stables, a park, a flower nursery, a pub, and a few others.
You just need to think 'who needs water' all gardens have water somewhere, as do most businesses.

I usually travel with the minimum water on board, as long as I know where I can get it on arrival, (we mostly do sites, so it' not usually a problem)

Never affects mine,,no matter how I drive,,or van weight it does 30 mpg.never alters. All ways travel with full water as Never know where we will be parking that night.BUSBY.

I wouldnā€™t have though too many stay where water is available most of the time really.
To me that sounds like a site, and if I stayed on sites most of the time Iā€™d probably get a caravan. Having all thatā€™s required for a few days to a week onboard is one of the great advantages of a motorhome to me.

We always find this, we never vary from 34 to the gallon , full, empty, 80 on the motorway or piddleing about country roads, said this many times on here but always get argument.
