Both our dogs are on raw food diets . Our MH has a decent freezer but ideally would like a cool box with super insulation for the garage ( doesn’t have to be that big) . Not sure about using the 12v. Any recommendations ?

12v are pretty heavy on batteries.
I believe you can now get compressor versions but know nothing of them.
I think the 12v ones work similar to the vans fridge but without any coolant gas.
A fan blows a constant flow over a heat sink which protrudes inside. The heat sink draws warm air from inside and the cooler exterior part is in the airflow to cool it.
The 12v fan runs continuously.

Would a three way model to cover everything suffice? Not cheap mind.

Igloo are the best value out of the decent 5-7 day ice retention style coolboxes.

The cheapo coolboxes use the Peltier effect (it's on wiki) they use several amps just for a small coolbox and only usually go down 20°c below ambient.

The best ones for 12v power efficiency use compressors, they're loads more money but only use 2 or 3 amps ?

PS our compressor collbox was about £250 and goes down to minus 10c

Look at the coleman xtreme ones too, you just put supermarket ice cubes in and there is a drain to let out the water.

Thanks for that ... been on amazon

Costco always used to have them but can’t see them on the website now, we got the igloo maxcold island breeze 50 from them a couple of years ago for £55 delivered.

One of the reasons we stopped the raw food with our dog was that it was impossible to keep enough for a week away in the freezer.

Took a while but she did make the move in the end and it’s much easier.

Oh we won’t move away from raw with our two old boys and we think we can cope for 2 weeks . But with the next one ... we may have to reconsider

She was a puppy so yes, I wouldn’t move an older dog either.

The things we do for them. :-)

Tell me about it. But can’t do without them I think . Even tonight talking about a pup when our two have gone :-(

Wouldn't they love a change of food? I always think it must be very boring for them eating the same meal every day. Imagine eating jam on toast every day for the rest of your life ?

They get the treat or two , a biscuit or a lamb neck but the reality is they are very healthy and my eldest boxer is defying the “average” death age.

thinking about it - I was at my healthiest on a protein diet as well :-)

We have a WAECO CFX26, can be either a cooler or freezer, runs off 12V AND 240V but they are not cheap. Must have had ours for 10 years or more and used to have it wired up permanently in the motorhome garage.

I use a Dometic cool ice, they ain’t cheap but they are really good.

How about a cool box and a few ice packs? While some are cooling in the box, you can be freezing the others.
Otherwise you need one with a compressor (not cheap) and you may have a problem shedding the extracted heat. My garage used to get very warm, which doesn't help the objective of keeping things cool.

Yep that makes sense to keep freezing the packs

Outside the box - I'm experimenting with vacuum packing... taking the frozen packs and letting them defrost in the fridge/icebox
As I understand it, raw meat which would last 3-4 days refrigerated will last 10+ days vac packed.
You could probably add another 3 or 4 days with it defrosting in the fridge.

Another option, if you need longer, is dehydration an option?

A basic vacuum sealer starts from £20 [which is what I bought], but I'm not completely convinced of it's effectiveness, so perhaps a better one.
Dehydrators about the same starting price.

Cheaper than buying an expensive 12v camper freezer. And no payload/space issues.
Worth thinking about & doing some research?

The reality is that we’ve got our 2 old fellas for a couple of years and then we will either travel doggy free but more likely get a pup and bring him up on dry stuff. But the options recommended will tide us over until then .

cheers funsters
