Hi all. Can anyone suggest a Aire, or campsite or Municipal, that are in towns that have a big or small Christmas Markets? Looking at Northern France or Belgium, up to two, two and a half hours from Calais. Have used the Jeugdstadion in Ieper twice now and want somewhere different

Many thanks,
Dave

Look at the municipal Aire in Arras. Lovely town with one of the best weekly markets in France. Christmas markets are in one of the two main squares which are very attractive.
Good restaurants and nightlife. Belgian beer. Brand new Aire with fantastic facilities and a short stroll from the centre. Ticks most boxes.

Great campsite in Bruge called Camping Memmling https://www.brugescamping.be/ walking distance to the wall city and over the way from an hypermarket, have used it a couple of times previously. Great facilities including free wifi and lovely Christmas Market in a great location. Also an Aire just outside the walled city.

Yeah, gravelines (y) (y) (y) ;)
Cracking Christmas market/display last year, first time at Gravelines, very safe, will return next time I use the tunnel👍
BTW how do you pronounce “Gravelines?” When I went up to the ET booth and they asked where I stayed last night, they kinda giggled when I pronounced it Grave lines🤷🏼‍♂️

That's how I say it, Julie does her french on it and it's something like gravel Lene.
But always found the locals very glad to see you whatever you call it.

Colmar and Strasbourg are probably too far, but I like the sound of Gravelines and Arras. Do they have aires or municipals within walking distance?

Without any obvious bias , we did a tour of markets one year, but gravelines started the next day when we went, and we went round all the usual suspects, and when we got back to gravelines , wondered why we had toured around when we found this one was far superior to the others.
Really!!!!!!

Arras centre is a 10 minute stroll from the Aire.

Yeah when we went it was pretty good but the Aire was on a hell of a slope, but I believe there is a new one now.

This is the way to pronounce it...if I manage to put it on here! :p:p
EDIT Never mind can't manage to do it.
It says , it doesn't have the right extension ..... just foreign language to me:(

I would put it like this: Gravel lynn the "e" at the end is only slightly pronounced and you don't pronounce the "s"

Mmmm - long A .... sort of 'Grar' -then the 've' is voiced but sort of not emphasised - then 'lin' then 'uh'.

Not a short A as in'cat' - say it more like the AU in 'larf' !

Also an Aire just outside the walled city.
We stayed on this in October, very clean and tidy.
Very handy as 10min walk into the town.

Only issues was they have larger bays marked up for bigger vans in a separate area with signs.
Yep, small vans decided to park there despite plenty of spaces in the other bit🤬

Yes the Aire at Gravelines is a 2/3 minute walk to the markets, Arras new Aire is probably 15 minutes.

It seems more like a traditional Christmas market, the year we went they had a live manger scene inc all the local farm animals.

From our point of view, Gravelines Xmas market knocked spots off of Bruges

Ypres was the biggest disappointment for us, not that it's that bad but we were expecting it to be something special and it really wasn't, just tired old tat stalls and a skating rink that wasn't working.
