I posted a few months ago about getting a 6 month multi entry France Visa to beat the 90/180 Schengen rule (link below)

This prompted a lot of debate so I thought I’d update now I’m back in U.K.

We spent 130 days in EU, roughly 50 in France, 50 in Spain, the remainder in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium.

We entered and exited through France- that was the only time our passport was stamped (interestingly not on the visa page either time)

Our Visa allowed 6 months travel in France plus the 90 day Visa free allowance. Technically we could have stayed for 9 months. We spent less than 90 days out of France so even if ‘they’ were aware we’d left France, we were still within the 90 day limit.

Debate on the original post centred around whether ‘they’ would know we’d left France and entered other Schengen countries. It was suggested that this could happen by somehow linking our motorhome to our passports, biometric scanning as we drove through borders (assume somehow scanning our eyes) or tracking credit card transactions.

I can confirm that none of this happens. The border official waved us through at Calais and I made reference to the visa (he didn’t seem to have spotted it and didn’t mention the fact we’d entered Schengen 130 days ago). I asked about our 90 day allowance band he said ‘you still have it, it’s unaffected’. That tells me that ‘the system’ hasn’t recorded our various exits and entries to and from France.

As I said in the original post, it’s a lot of red tape and €99 but in my opinion well worth it. We’ll certainly get a French visa again next time we plan a long trip into the EU.

Well that is encouraging news. We intend to get one next year to spend June, July, August and September in France. We have an Australian friend here who does the same and she said it is easy.

Thanks for the update & definitely encouraging. We will certainly look into going through the same process next year. Always good to hear someone’s actual experience-thanks 😊

Thanks for the very encouraging information.

Sounds good only i don't think I could spend 6 months in France

A Spanish one would be better

How would they know where you are as no border control.
Bye the sound of it only stamp into France and then again back to the UK.

my mate is doing 9 months as I type this, he’s crossed into France then done northern Spain, down into Portugal and Algarve, atm is back in Spain at Estapona for a month.

He’s a crossing to come home booked in January and has confirmed, as yet the only look at his passport was at the tunnel when he crossed 👍

Just out of curiosity is the visa application done online or by post ( excuse ignorance I've never done one ) and what does it entail?

I could have done with one for this winter but I'm already on the road now so couldn't do anything via post

Has he got one of these visa's?
hi Tam

yes he has, he says it’s a doddle to get them as well, most is online but then you have to attend a face to face meeting at one of the 3 appointed offices and i’m pretty sure one is in the north. The other 2 being London and Manchester

You have to apply within 3 months of your departure btw.

I think you will find that the 6 month visa and the 90 day requirements are that the 6 month one requires you to have left the Schengen zone at or before the 6 months are up then re enter for the 90 day one, not used one straight after the other with no break. The other aspect is your passport is stamped on entering the zone and again on leaving (or should be) if you overstay it may be that it is logged and the next time you attempt to enter the zone you may be prevented from doing so Or fined. As immediate checks may not be carried out at the time of your crossing. Don’t forget most passports if not all are bar coded and it is a computer that logs the entry and exit dates as against the person stamping your passport. From enquiries
we have made this seems to be correct but getting a clear answer is still a challenge.
