I am a new member on the forum and trying to find my feet, its always best to keep a low profile I guess when you join and work out who is who, I am just wondering how YOU work out who knows what, it seems some people think they know a lot but don't and some who don't inadvertently say things that are really helpful. I guess just because someone has been a member for a long time no doubt have great experience but also some might be out of touch with reality e.g. modern ways of doing things and likewise new members who may some great knowledge, some may have chips on their shoulders, some problems that need help, how do YOU work out who is who and what method do you use?

I just want to be diplomatic and get the most out of the forum as I can, I will of course add any of my experiences if I feel I have any to help others, that I guess is how it should be.

GREAT forum by the way and well run!

Thanks,

It’s how long you’ve been a member that counts, as the longer you have been on the forum the better your understanding of who to listen to on what subject. At the end of the day, you have to decide what advice to take and what to leave.
I’m very grateful to those that respond, even if I don’t take the advice.

Don’t worry about individual thread contributions, rather look at it as a whole. Most every question on the forum will be resolved by the threads end, if someone gives dodgy or wrong advice to a question in a thread, it will be corrected by others very quickly. That is only true of busy forums. most other UK motorhome forums a question might have the wrong answer for days before someone logs in and corrects it.

Seems VERY active on here, you can get answers in minutes, not that they are all right mind you :D2 But as you say they seem to be sorted by the end(y)

Seriously, do you really think 230 posts in 6 days is "keeping a low profile"? I think you have set an unbeatable world record for a new member!
I'm trying to get my moneys worth :D2 What the hell would you join and at a critical time when you need info and keep quiet, have I missed something? I have learned so much on here in a week or so I could NEVER have got that elsewhere, Ok there is some sh!te people post but that just triggers my bullish!t / chip on shoulder / jealous alarm and I ignore it(y)

Just remember, posting in the U shaped lounge or the Belly locker gets you no points

What you should do, is ask a teenager. They know everything!

It also works the other way round, someone joins, professes to know everything, done everything , got everything , insults one two people or takes the piss, then suddenly asks a stupid question that unravels all they say before.

I think you need to know how the forum works if you ask for advice and over time you get to know the mindset of quite a few members.
There are those that will reply just to keep their post count up, those that will reply with a guess or something they have heard, those that know what they are talking about and some that reply just to relate an anecdote of their own that they might think is helpful.

Just like people in real life.
Your role in the forum then after asking advice, is to sort the wheat from the chaff ( ‘cos there will be chaff) and see if anything helps.

I must have missed that one, been too busy sorting things out and posting on some threads (y) Where are your posts and I will have a read?

You definitely can’t rely just on how long someone has been a member or how high their post count is. As you have correctly recognised, some people, even some long standing members, seem to feel the need to reply to just about every thread and appear to post definitive answers, when in fact what they are posting is nonsense.

But after you’ve been here a while, you soon get to recognise the bullshitters, and as Jim correctly points out, on such a busy forum, it doesn’t take very long for a substantially wrong reply to be corrected by a number of other members.

Every reply brings a post to the top of the pile
A good post or a bad post will do the same
but it is better than bumping a post to do the same

Personally i have found many answers and let the jokers ride on
As i said every reply is helpfull if only to return your post to the top

Just be careful not to insult the poster or give reason for someone
to hit the report button as rule one is not a happy time
Oh and have a nice day y'all

Hopefully ive not upset anyone ill just returnt to me daydreaming

There is a lot of knowledge on here and some very good tech stuff
Also an amount of daily banter that only the people posting will understand due to knowing each other.
If you get fed up with anyone just put them on ignore, I think you can ignore as many as you like, I only have a few hundred ?
