Our first trip away was a huge success. Thanks to all the help and support from the members on this forum in giving me the confidence to do this. We felt very happy with our small but significant trip and our confidence will continue to grow I'm sure. We went to CCC Moffat which is on our doorstep, I have to say, everyone there was super friendly.

The one bizarre thing, one the way home, about half way down the motorhome it looks like some sort of heat shield or underside protector dropped through 90 degrees. It would seemingly be okay above 20mph, but below that it sounded like we were towing a metal oil drum as it clattered along the road. At least we were on the way home! And the moho is booked in to be looked at this coming Saturday. Any ideas what this might be or why its suddenly dropped?

We are looking forwards to our next adventure now, at New England Bay.

Thanks again everyone.

Can you post a picture of it? I'd get under it and have a look see if you can attach it back on with some cable ties or similar.

Had that happen a few months ago, makes you sit up! I just had a new exhaust box fitted.

Perhaps someone started to steal your catalytic converter and was disturbed. As suggested above tie it up to prevent further damage.

No, it was an advisory on the MOT in 2019, outer skin was splitting.

Noted ours was hanging off at last MOT suspect it's gone by now very flimsy piece of structure. Don't bother fixing it back on with cable ties. Haha plastic and heat don't work lol

Looks like the exhaust heat shield......I wouldn’t loose too much sleep to be honest.

Just don't park on long grass after a long trip. My Dad once had a Combine Harvester catch fire, the Brigade turned up and immediately sprayed water under their engine before tackling the fire, they did not want the hot exhaust setting fire to the dry straw and them.

That's exactly how mine looked! It was 13 years old and lasted 75k miles, local garage changed it, I suspect a Fiat part.

Agree with macca.
The silencer is made up from individual skins, not one piece of metal.
That one has rotted at the seam on the right side (in the picture) of the box and come adrift.
You can most probably pull it off with a bit of wiggling.
It also looks like you have a gash in the silencer... But it could be some kind of staining.

Ours became loose & scraped along the ground when the van was less than six months old, I got the dealer to "fix" it when it went in for its first oil service. From memory its a very flimsy bit of corrugated steel plate fitted by Fiat, I haven't been under to check what they did, or whether its still there or not, its certainly not a robust piece of heat shielding.

Thanks everyone for your replies and suggestions. We went to a local chap who looks after the moho for us (Caravana Leisure @ Lochmaben) and he kindly cut off the dragging metal sheet.
It is a heat shield that is part of the exhaust as Macca1954 suggested. I am hoping that the exhaust will last this year out but may replace it sooner as its starting to fail.
Thanks again for all your inputs, much appreciated.
