Fire Bucket

Are they a requirement for THS's?

Never needed one on CCC THS.
Maybe never "needed" one but CCC THS's rules and regulations state a fire bucket should be placed in position close to van in prominent position..

We've been asked on site to make sure we have one.

A number of years ago we won a bottle of plonk at a THS when a free raffle took place but only for those who had a fire bucket in situ when stewards walked round..

Complete and utter waste of time unless you have a stirrup pump to direct the jet. They knew that in 1939, yet some jumped up experts demand a fire bucket. Yes if it's a small fire and you have lots of buckets, but throwing buckets of water in some circumstances will spread a fire. Some years ago Berkshire Fire and Rescue ran a course for company fire Marshall's and had us trying to put out a waste paper bin fire. The first bucketful thrown tipped the waste paper bin over.

Fairly certain JockandRita will agree.

Our CAMC local centre demanded it was placed by the A frame. I told him if we could find my A frame, I would find him a fire bucket. I had two extinguishers and a fire blanket.

Used mine once for something other than washing the bonnet!

At a THS outside Plymouth approximately 15y ago a young girl was walking her King Charles spaniel. Two other children were unable to control their dog (Alsatian?) which picked the spaniel up in its jaws and shook it violently. The big dog’s owner came out of his tent and told it to stop: no joy.

So he screamed and kicked the dog, trying to get it to release the spaniel: no joy!

I ran quite a way and emptied my fire bucket over it, causing it surprise, so it opened its mouth and all was well. Apart from the vet’s bill which came to over £1000.

Both dogs were on leads. You never know when things will be needed!

i would love to see a written risk assessment ....... especially the rating they give to probability/likelihood of there being a fire and the control measure of a 2 gallon bucket being sufficient to deal with the size/severity of fire they have used in the risk assessment to mitigate the danger and reduce the risk to an acceptable level.... !

but its their game, and so their rules i suppose ......

Morag, we've been refused entry onto a THS because we didn't have a bucket, (only because we hadn't replaced the leaky one yet) ............................but I could buy one from a pile of builders buckets the Marshal was very conveniently flogging. WHAT?

It mattered not a jot that I had a decent Fire Extinguisher onboard at the time, and I would have bought a red plastic bucket anyway when we went into town.

There may well be a collective advantage of 2 x gallons, (9 x litres) of water available outside everyone's outfit, but to be honest, (and I think MisterB Dave will agree), I have been to several caravan fires, and not seen one saved yet, as due to the materials in the build and furnishings, they go up very quickly.
Unless you catch the seat of the fire in the very early stages, you've got no chance with buckets of water.......................if not experienced in Firefighting.

I carry 3 x Fire extinguishers, two of which are the latest high pressure water mist types, plus my trusty red plastic bucket...........................so I don't get refused entry to another THS.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I thought the mantra was 'get out stay out and call the fire brigade'. The further away from the gas bombs the better rather than encouraging the futility of getting close enough to an inferno to launch a bucket of water! Surely that's the stuff of 'Carry on Camping'!!!

Been on lots of CCC Temporary Holiday Sites, but never heard a mention of fire buckets.

:giggle:

You are a rules person aren’t you

I am so opposite

Not been requested/required to have a bucket, but then only used a couple of THS so far. But if a requirement for a THS then why not also the full C&CC sites?

Whilst no doubt ineffective on a caravan/ motorhome/tent fire which would immediately be too large, perhaps bucket is useful against spark from a BBQ?

We carry a fire extinguisher and fire blanket in our van, we have never thought about a fire bucket as we never light fires or BBQ'S near the van.

Because Licensed Sites are required to install Fire Fighting Equipment, (eg, extinguishers and hose reels) in and around the site, as part of their certification. The amount and positioning, will depend on the size of the site.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

It is a recommendation.

I know someone relatively friendly asked us where ours was on one rally and I told him - in the locker underneath the bed. I added that I knew why he was asking, thems the rules etc - but honestly, if we had a fire' all around me in earshot would know pdq because I'd be screaming FIRE!!! at the top of my voice and running like hell as far away as possible. And Pete opened the locker door and showed our pristine red plastic fire bucket to him.

A bucket chain WAS an very effective means of firefighting, when Campsites were used for Tent Camping , it's not what you have. but the way you use it...but technology has moved on since then, unfortunately some rules haven't....,🚒

Not at all.... not my rules, CCC rules...
And as stated above "their game
..their rules"
If you want to be a rebel...carry on..
They are still “rules“ though.

Daft ones at that

Really? I'm trying to visualise how big a tent fire would be to require a bucket chain to extinguish it and if it's that big could they safely have put it out by the time they had organised a bucket chain? Unless it was to reduce fire spread across the grass etc
Or

I wonder why THS's don't require beaters for grass fires (now that was hard work, eh JockandRita ) or buckets of sand to deal with electrical fires in motorhomes and caravans ....:imoutahere:
