Hi. Has any fellow funsters had any dealings with Desira Group Fiat Professional at Bury St Edmunds or Diss. Apparently at 4.5 years and 20k miles I need to have the cam belt changed.

This is somewhat of a mystery. If the same chassis cab had had a commercial body on it instead of a MH when it came out of the factory it would be approaching 100k miles before the belt would need changing.

To date all the servicing, hab/damp checks have been done by the original suppling dealer Geoff Cox Derby, however reading a fellow funsters recent experience it would appear that maintenance and servicing should be carried out by Fiat Professional.

It’s 5 years or 100k miles, whichever is first.

No need to go to Fiat, many good independent garages out there as well.

it will be expensive at a main dealer thats for sure, a Gates kit and an independent garage you can trust will halve the cost.

Thanks, I'll give Eddie Payne a call tomorrow. Have you had experience of them? are they on the relatively new trading estate behind the animal feed mill ?

Just goes to prove Its all all about "who you know" and thanks to funster recommendations, all those locally will know and use their services also.(y)
Now all I need is a recommendation of an indie near me that is as good & trustworthy of giving a decent service.

Let me know how you get on please, my fiat motorhome is coming up to 4 years old with 20,000 on the clock, I’ve used desira at bury, very expensive, changed to a local garage for a service this year and it was much cheaper.

No mystery. A commercial chassis cab is subject to the same change criteria as your motorhome, which is 120,000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes first, so if the commercial van only travelled 20,000 miles a year, it would require a timing belt change at 5 years. If your motorhome travelled 120,000 miles in 6 months, it would require the belt change after 6 months.

But then there is the additional proviso that, although the 5 year interval must never be exceeded, it should be reduced to 4 years for heavy duty use, which includes long periods of idling and can also be interpreted as long periods of standing idle (like a motorhome, for example) because periods of sitting doing nothing are just as hard on the belt as racking up a lot of miles. If your van has done 20K miles in four and a half years, it has obviously spent long periods sitting idle, like mine ;)

My van at 4.5 years and 17K miles is having the belt changed right now. The alternative should it break is not worth thinking about, to be honest.

And you will generally pay more at a main dealer, due to the high labour charges reflecting their overheads for the large premises, subscription to the manufacturers' technical portal, mandated diagnostic equipment and manufacturers' special service tools, etc. that a small independent doesn't have to bother about.

A lot of Manufactures use Gate belts as original equipment, being an Ex. Garage Owner not doing my own maintenance now , I would always use a Main Dealer for Cambelt change , they have the knowhow and tension equipment , yes it's more expensive than a non franchise garage, servicing can be usually done locally, but, there again have they the equipment to check for faults ,( dam over complicated vehicles of today 😤)

I believe many of the Fiat OEM belts are manufactured by Dayco, although they probably have more than one supplier. The tensioner and idler pulleys in the Fiat boxes in front of me are Dayco, and the belt has "Made in Italy" imprinted on it. Fiat don't give their dealers any tensioning figures other than the tensioner pulley guide marking settings and initial rotation of the engine by hand at an increased tension setting to bed the belt in, although Iveco do state harmonic frequencies for the belt on the same engines.

Booked in at Fiat & Alfa indi specialist in Bury St Eds, for next Friday 26th; New Cam belt including pullies etc, and a full service, all OEM parts. I mentioned the water pump and they normally inspect the water pump for any play, wear or leaks and if it needs replacing that'll be done as well. However reading a number of threads on here I shall call them of Monday and have the water pump done regardless.

I use a local garage for my main servicing normally however when I used them 3 vans ago on the 3ltr Comformatic van(Leaking resevoir, lost gears) I had, they fixed it no problem apart from they did not have the software to reset the onboard computor. The main dealers do and luckily they managed to get the required download from them. That is the reason I am going to the main dealer for the 1st full service as it is due out of warranty soon, as Fiat will have to honour any faults without the excuse of not using the designated dealer, then will resume with the excellent local franchise I normally use.

Just got back from having the cam belt, water pump and service. All carried out by Eddie Payne Independent Fiat & Alfa specialised in Bury St Edmunds. All genuine OEM parts. oils and lubes. The old belt, tensioner, and water pump were made available to inspect, not that I was bothered but a nice touch all the same (see attached images) Found them very easy to deal with, nothing was to much trouble. Highly Recommended.

As requested; see my comments below. Very nice genuine people. Took time to explain in depth exactly what they would be doing. The price paid matched their original quote. All the old parts were available to inspect. Disposable plastic seat covers placed on seats, no dirty oily finger or foot marks, steering wheel, pedals and mats lovely and clean. Eddie (the owner of the business) ask me to check the water level after a couple of days, as it may need topping up with just fresh water, new antifreeze was added as part of the job. They ask if I wanted to register my details on their database, this would result in being notified prior to when the MoT is due, and the next service.
Based on this experience I would use them in the future.

They are rapidly gaining the sort of reputation Arthur Daily would be proud of, and haemorrhaging trade customers because of it

That's why I never used Fiat (IVECO) main dealers when I had my haulage business,,,expensive slow and not the best fitters.Sorry but that's how I found them..BUSBY.

Don't think we had the Bessie MOT'd - but anyway Pete duly rang our local Fiat Pro when we needed to MOT the Pilote and they said they couldn't do it because they didn't have the facilities to lift anything that tall - so why didn't he ring an Independent Citroen (or is it Peugeot?) commerical garage, where they farmed out some of their work anyway? Which he did, and it's been going there for all it's mechanical needs ever since.
