hi guys . back in 2019 march when Spanish police came & shut the campsite then told us to go home ( covid 19 ) upon arriving at the Calais ( 3 weeks early ) only 4 passenger's the rest truck drivers NON with masks on only us felt so unsafe . bill said that's till things get better we will use the tunnel we have had 2 trips to the alps sept 2020 & august 2021 . using the train for the first time was a bit claustrophobic but only the once but miss the farmhouse breakfast on board especially bill . incidentally pidou was closed at Calais so we had to go to there other booze superstore at mack they said it was because of the b word don't known if its for good . anyway roll-on the 20th December . val

Tunnel every time. Eurotunnel have been great in extending expired tickets 3 times now. Customer service is great and there is always another train if you are delayed getting there, and often an earlier option should you be early at check in.

Tunnel every time for us. (y)

For us, it's down to the convenience of the tunnel and 3 times the value of Tesco points which makes it the cheaper option for us.
hi two on tour . i see from your avatar the wooden crosses we have the same which we buy from Ypres & take to grandads grave at tine cot cemetery . val

Yes, tunnel every time for us.

As Riverbankannie said, there's always another train shortly if you miss one and it's so convenient.

At this time of year especially, no need to worry about gales and storm force winds in the Channel.

And if travelling from the north or west, it cuts off 15 miles driving in each direction compared to Dover Docks, so a gallon of diesel saved on a return journey. ;) (y)

If I’m going to France I do like the Poole Cherbourg crossing as it’s only an hour from home and is so civilised. If we’re off to Spain then we like the long crossing from Portsmouth or Plymouth to Bilbao or Santander.

I’m sure if we had dogs or suffered from sea sickness we’d use the tunnel or if we lived in the SE.

I use the ferry from Dunkirk.I only travel in good weather. It is far cheaper . it allows me a rest before driving for hours again. I have used the tnnel on a couple of occasions from the Uk side. I doubt I would ever use it from the French side as Calais to me is like a 3rd world african country.

hi Carolyn. we started going to France in the seventies in tents the French franc days & went Newhaven / Dieppe ( don't think they have a crossing there now ) but bill spent all the time in the loo throwing up never again . val

hi gus-lopez. we know what you mean about Calais its not as bad as it was now they have found out dingys float so there is no need to hitch a ride on the m/h . having said that Calais is a no go zone for us & only the fuel stations heading for Calais on the motorways open the Aire de repos are ( picnic ones ) closed due to activity by you know who . val

If going down the east side prefer the tunnel. The trip we are on at the moment we had to go to Belgium first, ferry was £83, tunnel £160 so we took the ferry.
Coming back Dieppe/Newhaven that was £96 with over 60 discount.

If going down the west side always go Newhaven/Dieppe, saves us 400 miles on a return trip. Helps living 20 miles from Newhaven.

Tunnel is so easy, so quick and we don’t have to see anyone. Perfect for non crowd lovers like me.

Ferry companies were major clients of mine when I was working. Never paid for a crossing for over 20 years, including when we had a RV and toad. However, if I hadn't made arrangements to pre-board, the normal loading arrangements used to drive me mad. The last time we used a ferry it was a Night-Lite or whatever they called it, not to save money but because the time suited us. There were an exceptional number of coaches booked, and the deck officer loaded them before the motorhomes. Consequently by the time we got upstairs there weren't any seats left, apart from the odd one or two amongst crowds of kids, and we had to wait ages for the coaches to collect all their passengers before we could get off. As I said that was the last time we used a ferry, and never again. The tunnel is so much more civilised.

Newhaven to Dieppe still runs. If you’re bad travellers then the Tunnel is your friend!

I have only been down the A16 once in the last 9 years. I go straight across at Abbeville to St .Omer then left if going direct to Dunkirk ,otherwise I meander to Bergues for overnight.

You don't really see Calais do you.BUSBY.

Have only used the tunnel once but have a voucher due to a covid cancellation.
Yes I miss the facilities on the ferries, but the feeling of safety inside our van more than makes up for it.
busby we will travel the night before for an early morning ferry, sleep over at a Brit stop or P4N short tunnel journey and both fresh as daisies for our first days travel. Like setting off from home about 8pm traffic is less and so much less stressful, although some detours leave a lot to be desired 😬
599 a flask to make a drink and a snack , by the time that is all done you will be almost there. I hate tunnels and did many a detour to avoid them but that trip back from France has changed my mind.

We started using the Tunnel when we had our dog as you ate all together during the 35 minute crossing.

We still use them because they are so accommodating on changes to bookings.

Also, last week we had booked the 1050hrs crossing from Calais to Folkestone as we had thought that we would stay at an Aire some way from Calais.

Having spoken to a couple that we met who had used the “new” Aire in Calais itself we spent our last night there. (Excellent, safe and convenient).

We awoke early and decided to head to the Calais Terminal. As a result we were put on the 0835hrs crossing. Result!👍
