since 2007, 25 years tuggin before that.
We're away in the van & stopped at a supermarket. When we tried to leave, the cab battery was dead. Not surprised it died as its the original, but was surprised it just died without warning. Anyway, new battery fitted & all OK apart from fuel gauge. Just put 80 litres in but it hardly moved, still showing less than 1/4 full.
Any ideas?

Bet it's a Fiat and if so, nothing to worry about. Exact same thing happened to me earlier this year and Fiat cahnged the battery in Spain and when I pointed out the fuel guage was not reading full when it should was told yes not a problem and it will self correct within a short time. That will be £450.00 for my time and analysis thank you. Still cheaper than Fiat.

How long did it take to correct itself?

Reading a thread a few days ago regarding fitting a fuel pickup tube for a diesel heater. If the fuel tank sender is disconnected, effectively left without power same as removing the battery, for more than 10 minutes it causes problems with the fuel gauge.
There was no mention how to fix it and no mention that it would correct itself so just wait and see what happens.
I think if it doesn't self correct it would need the ECU interrogating and resetting with a professional Fiat diagnostic tool.

LOL Sorry! I have a sad sense of humour as a few members will know. It was all back to normal within 36 Hrs but we were on the move and driving long distances and filling up a couple of times. As best as I can recall no movement when static but slow and gradual increases as we drove along. Be patient, I'm certain it will self correct.

Just a bit disconcerting , setting off to drive 200 miles with less than a quarter of a tank.

But your not are you. You've just put in 80 Lts. Bet before the end of your journey it has self corrected. :dance2::dance2::dance2:
Or was the pump faulty/empty & it only gave me a few litres. Normal I would have filled it up but it was a" pay at pump" & it cut off at £99. May have to go & top it right up just for peace of mind.

No fuel passing through pump, pump turns off.
Too many failsafes to cover the garage owner.
You got 80ltrs.

Not so. It happened to my son about a year ago. Fortunately he had not left the forecourt & insisted that they monitored him topping it up at another pump. He was then able to put another 50 odd litres into a 60 litre tank which is impossible. They took down all the details of the transactions & the vehicle, a few weeks later he got a refund & £30 in vouchers as an apology.

There is a possible explanation for that involving a failure/fault in the shop console particularly in fuel station with shop. Customer 1 puts say 50 litres into tank, drives forward and parks enters shop and starts to shop. Customer 2 drives in and cashier or system overrides console allowing no 2 to fill. Takes say 20 litres enters shop to pay, customer 1 is still shopping, customer 2 now is asked to pay for 50 litres. Shouldn't happen but does occassionaly. Drive offs can have same result.

Ours does it if you fill up without stopping the engine.
Next stop, engine off, wait for about a minute and turn on.. all sorted

Had the same with the starter battery on my Peugeot. Stopped to shop, then wouldn't start, I had just driven about 200, so thought can't be the battery, but it was, it just suddenly gave up the ghost Every thing worked after fitting new battery bar the cab radio.. Still not sorted it. Lol

Many pay at pump garages in France limit the amount you can put in, especially if you are using a UK card. I have seen ranges between 90 and 120 Euros set. It normally shows on the screen. We have got close to the total but never exceeded because we tend to fill up often rather than run too low.

My fuel gauge stopped working after some electrical work had been carried out on it. I disconnected the positive to the battery for around 10 minutes and when reconnected hey presto the gauge was working fine again.
