Whilst I love google maps and using google navigation, and a couple of tom-toms in the van too, I also find paper-based maps useful.
Paper maps frequently identify 'scenic' routes, which I don't believe I've seen on any electronic devices. That, and some of the other details on hard copy maps, are extremely informative.
If in the U.K., can't beat carrying relevant Ordnance Survey maps of the locality - stacked with detail and interesting info - though I know they're available online now.
