Hi

Would anyone have a recommendation for European breakdown cover? I'm insured through the CAMC and they offer breakdown with Green Flag but it only seems to be in the UK. Looking at various previous posts, the RAC gets good reviews through the CCC (and we're members) but personal experiences from anyone that has had to use the service would be invaluable.

Thanks!

Mike

I have a separate account with Green Flag. ( Not tied to other insurance.)
They were very helpful with a failed clutch in Germany a few years ago.

Nationwide FlexPlus covers all my vehicles (3 x m/bikes, 2 x cars and the m/h) and any vehicle in which I'm a passenger, plus travel ins and a great deal more. All for £13 a month.

Don’t forget that Nationwide also give a £100 ‘bribe’ if transferring a current account from another bank, and £125 if upgrading from an existing Nationwide account. (y)

We use Green Flag. They were great when we broke down in Spain. OK at first they sent low loader to North France when we were in Southern Spain:cool:

Have I seen it mentioned that there's an age cut off with the Nationwide account, the holder that is not the vehicle?

does not apply to the breakdown cover (an extra fee to pay if you are over 70 for the travel insurance

We've got the C&CC Arrival / RAC breakdown cover, which is valid for any vehicle we drive.

From memory, their continental cover lasts for up to 350 days pa of overseas travel.

Oh and any size and weight of motorhome is included.

We've only had to call them out to the car in the UK and they were fine, but we're happy with what they offer for foreign travel with the van too.

If you open the bank account, you do not need to use it. I have had the account for 5 years and have never done any more than set up a direct debit from my main current account to the NW to pay the monthly fee on the account. Have used the mobile telephone cover twice once for I phone screen replacement and another they swopped the I phone. There has never been a challenge that the account is not actively used. So for the cost of £150 over the 12 months great cover, Phone, Breakdown and Travel insurance. The travel insurance one;y covers for 30 days one trip. Our main bank (TSB) gives 60 days per trip, so we use that insurance to pay for the additional top up periods longer than 60 days.
Good luck

ASDA ( = Britannia = LV) give us 180 days European Cover for £142

CAMC offer Red Pennant motoring insurance. Not the cheapest but it covers the continuation of your holiday. Some years ago now when we broke down in Belgium just one hour off the ferry. They provided a hire car for three weeks, hotels and an allowance for meals. We continued our holiday and collected the repaired van on our way back to the ferry. The claim they paid out was equal to around 15 years premiums at that time. Useful if you want peace of mind.

Luckily, I just found out my wife has had a flex account for years :)

It does mean that I won't be covered if I'm driving alone but this only happens once in a blue moon so it's worth the risk.

Thanks for all the advice folks.

Mike

Just make sure its the flex plus account that costs £13 pm, and not the free account

We're upgrading her account to get the benefits. It'll not only save us on the Euro cover but we'll save on her own breakdown for the car and family travel cover. Absolute bargain. Thanks again.

Indeed so.
Having my 6 vehicles on just the one rolling FlexPlus policy avoids the risk of forgetting to renew and the hassle of having separate policies or getting new quotes.

(I didn't get the sweetener as it wasn't on offer when I took it up many years ago when it first came out).

Are you getting the £125 sweetener for upgrading from an existing account?

On the travel insurance, don't forget to check any pre existing illnesses are not reportable and if so make sure you let them know

We are with Caravanguard. Green flag and AA only cover up to 3m high in Europe. I only found out by accident. I actually spoke to a real person. I have a 2013 707 Rollerteam, overhead cab. Our length and width are fine but not height.

European and UK breakdown insurance added to my insurance through comfort, 365 days in the EU if required £65, having had the misfortune of breaking down in France, i can safely say that was the best £65 i ever spent.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

That's interesting. I've just read through their T&C's and it doesn't mention any height restrictions at all. It gives the length, width and weight limitations but nothing about height. I'm not sure they could refuse recovery if it's not in their own T&C's.

Green Flag recovered me twice in camper in Europe and once on bike in Pyrenees

You can pay for a year, then cancel when you get home and get full refund, pro-rata :)

Some people wonder why certain travellers give the rest of us a bad name...

They told me this when I called them. So no reason for your snide comment.
Nothing snide about it. I wouldn't do it as a matter of principle. You, of course, can do as you wish
