Hi Boys n Girls!
Happy Christmas!
It’s that time of year again! Not Christmas….. Booking our summer hols!
We are planning to travel around France, Loire Valley mostly, and will travel down to Folkestone on the 16th of June, then Eurotunnel on the 17th and back again on 4th July. We are planning to take our Toad, a Toyota Aygo, just under 4m long. I know, I know, there will be loads of nay sayers about toads in France but we are planning to stay off motorways and just use A,B & C roads. Move sites every 3-4 days.
The question is, what site is best to book the crossings on? CAMC? (We are members) or direct with Euro Tunnel? Or with somebody else?
Secondary question but equally as important, what do we book the toad as? A trailer? A caravan? Do we need to contact the people we get the tickets from and tell them it’s a toad?

Looking forward to your responses and experiences.

Thanks in anticipation!

Russ

Hello Russ.

Merry swaddling etc.

We are taking our toad in January and have it booked as a trailer. We booked the train with CAMC as we booked the Wintersun Rally at Alannia and you have to book at least one crossing with them else they add a surcharge.

Normally I would book direct for the same reason as Speve highlights but you can also put Tesco Clubcard points towards the cost.

C &CC give 10% discount and you can often get eairler trains at the cheap price.

We booked through c&cc , wouldn't bother again .
The 10% discount isnt worth the hassle and they didnt acknowledge that we'd booked a dog either so we got stung another £22 before boarding the train .

My inclination is always to book directly whenever possible. As mentioned, there is more flexibility if you choose to change the booking / time / date of travel etc. Eurotunnel have phone lines open significantly longer than either of the main clubs, and often it's possible to make amendments online 24/7 - which is not the case with third party reservations.

Also, I believe the Clubs make an admin charge for any changes.

Just an add on to that. We were in Spain in March 2020 when lockdown happened. Because the crossings were booked through C&CC we could not deal with BF direct or online. C&CC had gone to ground. To their credit CAMC had brought extra people in and helped us a lot.

yes, use the ferry. :xlaugh:

And make that DFDS Newhaven to Dieppe and benefit from the 20% discount if you qualify. I’ve done numerous comparisons with the Chunnel and other ferry operators and it’s a no brainer - for us anyway!

We are looking to head off to Spain in the next week. Not booked anything yet. How do you obtain or qualify for the 20% discount?
Thanks

Over 60 and make the booking by phone or at the port.
90% of our crossings are Newhave/Dieppe, it helps living less than 20 miles from Newhaven.

Probably wont use a ferry as apparently you have to leave your dogs in the vehicle for the crossing while you go upstairs to the passenger decks. This will freak out SHMBO! Also I’m not a great sailor, I was sea sick in an 8 man scull on Southport boating lake and it was literally like a mill pond…..

This we use tunnel... book one way only early to get discount then stop an hour from calais on way back and book return. It's a little more expensive but you don't ruin your trip stressing to get to port..

I've read on another thread on here that you can take dogs on board on the P&O ferry so might be worth looking into.

Likewise, we were in Spain in March 2022 for lockdown. But we had booked the Tunnel direct using Tesco points - the Tunnel were excellent.

We contacted them directly by phone and brought our return forward by about 10 days. They said "just get here when you can and we'll get you on the next available train!"

Direct using Tesco points every time for us.

I always use the Eurotunnel website as I use Tesco Clubcard points. It's even better now as you can alter bookings online without having to call them.
