Quite an old picture, Morris Minor, Ford 100E Prefect, Riley Elf, Austin A60.

Indeed and now we have a motorway network things are much improved .Taken from a cartoonist exhibition in a NT property.

Saw a couple of interesting fly on the wall programmes yesterday about the M25. It carries double the traffic for which it was designed. These days you have to plan your journeys to try to miss the peak times especially bank holiday weekends. The risk of long delays or even gridlock is always present no matter which day you pick.

Is there a UK equivalent to the Bison Futé website? If not, why doesn't our government provide one?

Unlike the French we don't have much in the way of alternative routes.
Most alternatives are winding country lanes where, faced with a tractor, most of the population wouldn't have a clue what to do next. :Eeek:

Richard.

The ability to select and then use reverse gear would be a good start.
So many drivers seem to not to be very proficient despite passing a test, particularly many regular users of the M25. (which was mainly where my comment was directed following @SpeedyDux post)
It's not known as the 'whacky races' for nothing.

I doubt you would come into that category though @Geo. :)

Richard.

Made worse by the middle lane hogs who have no idea that they are creating a tailback and have no chance of overtaking the car in the inside lane if there is one! My favourite at the moment is the numptys who insist on driving in the third lane of a four lane motorway even if there is no one in the other lanes.

We came to Walton on Thames yesterday from north wales and there was little in the way of hold ups- 60 mph in places but luckily they came to nothing.. I was really surprised at how easy it was to get to. There was a few miles on the M25too.

Make sure you buy some Lottery tickets, LADY LUCK IS RIDING ON YOUR SHOULDER

For all the tickets I buy, not too many I may add, but have won diddly.

What's a traffic jam? Up here its two sheep crossing the road at the same time!

When I lived in Inverness and was taking the mail up to Scrabster for the Orkney ferry I sometimes saw 6 cars, it was total gridlock.

I have an idea.... Convert all motorways to 4 lanes plus hard shoulder.

Hard shoulder purely for breakdowns and emergency vehicle access.
Lane one solely for trucks, no overtaking.
Lane two max speed 60mph for Sunday drivers, no overtaking.
Lane three minimum speed 70mph>max 100mph, overtaking permitted above 80mph.
Lane four.... No limit, headlamp flashing/horn/nudging permitted.

Probably more split-windscreen VWs around than any of those cars.
Aye because due to the cult following of them there's more old vws imported in to the UK from the us, Australia and south Africa than any other country.

I used to laugh when I had mine and folk would say ooh they are quite rare...

Until you go to a show like vanfest or bug jam at Malvern and there's about 10000 vw campers there lol
