Went out for a run in the van today with the intention of dropping the engine oil and replacement filter.
When I got underneath I looked at the sump, did a little scraping and ohh dear...... rusty sump syndrome.
I left the oil change for today.
It looks a fairly simple DIY job with a socket set, am I right in that conclusion ?
Is there anything I should be aware of before starting ?
I`m sure it`s been discussed on here before but couldn`t find thread.

PS Sheared off bolts would scare me senseless !!!

New sump needed. Be careful the bolts should not shear.(y)

Clean it up with a wire brush a paint it.

The replacements you can buy are way thinner metal than the original. I agree, clean it up and high temperature paint. Even if not perfect, you don't spend time laying underneath looking at it

If it is holed and leaking, then it will need replacing and a new gasket

Scraping, Kurust treatment, red oxide and hammerite sounds way easier than replacement.
So that's what I'll do as it's not leaking.
Thanks

I've repaired holed steel sumps before, the last one I did was my Ford eurocargo, brazed up all the smaller holes, but did have to use a penny and a two penny over two of the larger holes!

Still oil tight to this day 👍

Looking at your picture, I know I would definitely get carried away with the wire brush attachments, and paint as I would end up doing everything that looked rusty under there.
Done similar in the past, hellover job without a ramp, lying upside down, hot, sweaty, rust dust fogging goggles, face mask making it 10 times harder!
I do feel for you, its a horrible job, I would wait until the autumn or at least when its cooler, the thought of doing it in this hot weather?, No Way.
I wish you the best of luck, hope all goes well for you, whenever you do it., have plenty of tea breaks, dont rub your eyes!

In 2005, my son and I did a Charity rally, driving a £100 car from UK to Banjul in Gambia. One day, crossing the Sahara one of our group hit a rock and his sump-guard gave way. The sump was diecast metal and just shattered, dumping all the oil in an instant. We all stopped and went back, searching in the sand for all the bits. Then we tipped the car on its side and slowly fitted the jig-saw puzzle of 10+ pieces together, sticking them with epoxy liquid metal. After it dried, we each contributed 1/2 litre of oil and we all carried on to finish, 10 days later.

I think Techno and JockandRita replaced sumps and bought them from somewhere in Poland and they were thicker than the originals. And a reasoble price. (y)

You are right Jim. (y)
I was warned that it would probably be a cheap tinny version, but when it arrived it was a fair lump of a thing, and a decent gauge metal too.................................as was the LHD twin box exhaust for the same vehicle, again, from Poland, via Ebay.de ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Likely only surface rust. As others have said clean it up a d assess the condition. Any deep pits, replace it.

On the bright side if its rust it ain't leaking oil!!!
Good luck,if your not replacing it a d think it a bit iffy, make sure you,
Regularly dip the oil
Check oil level at ignition on (fiat)
Make dam sure the engine is never short of oil, tends to be eye wateringly, if only$@$-$@@@
