Hi, broken down in Switzerland with a busted water pump.
Anyone got any experience of having one changed? Cost etc. ?
Thanks,
David.

Condolences.
What do you actually want to know? Garage recommendation? Spares supplier? How difficult it is to replace it yourself?
Sadly in your situation I can't see that knowing the cost will help as you can't go far as it is.
Do you have breakdown cover? With your insurer, separate firm or through your bank?

Thanks for the reply.
We have breakdown cover with c&cc so have been recovered, luckily to a fiat dealer who seems very helpful.
They are going to quote, I was really after a guess as to what it should cost. It being a fiat agent I am less concerned about a potential rip off. They say 4 to 6 hours labour. Gulp. It's a pain to get at.
We'll see what they come back with.
So far the cover has worked very well.
Cheers,
David.

Price is £1200 parts and labour. Oh well. Could have been so much worse.
Should be back on the road tomorrow.

Water pumps are not normally very expensive, how much an hour do they charge. Looks like about £150.00
Don’t let it spoil your holiday though at least you have got it fixed.

Hmm, that's a bind. Still, as you say, it could've been worse; like a week or more to get it fixed so a bit of a blessing there.
There can be worse news in life ;)

Our water pump went in France last year on our Fiat 3L. The recovery firm quoted us 2000 Euros to fix and took us to their Ford garage. After I picked myself up off the floor, we went to a Peugeot garage opposite and they quoted us 600 Euros. Job done!

I don't know the engine so correct me if I'm wrong but if this engine has a cambelt, a broken waterpump could be the least of your worries!
Did it just overheat, chuck a load of water out or stop dead??

I prepared myself for a high price it being Switzerland.
A fiat dealer in Switzerland compared to a Peugeot dealer in France. I will smile sweetly and take the pill.

The 3 ltr engine has a gear driven cam fortunately. The water pump and the alternator share a belt. Big sigh of relief.

Ahhh easy fix then..... if you can access it haha. :D Good luck

Good luck. My heart goes out to you. We were both stressed to the hilt when our pump went. The main thing is you are at the garage and hopefully, it will be sorted ASAP

The water pump is part of 1 of the engine mounts the most expensive pattern part I can find is £100 most are around £60

It's the pump, belt, tensioner pulley and coolant, all at main dealer prices. The expensive bit is the labour. The pump is such a pig to get at and the engine needs supporting while the pump is out. Not something to attempt on the campsite with one set of combination spanners and a few screwdrivers. ?
Hopefully we will only lose a couple of days of the holiday to a major breakdown.
One bit of bad luck but lots of good.
Awaiting spares delivery on a couple of the items from another dealer this morning, then they can get stuck in this afternoon. ?
Cheers,
David.

Crikey ! What are the pumps made of in Europe ! ? Solid unobtanium ? Platinum ?
Most expensive one I could find was £130, cheapest aftermarket on £42
Genuine Fiat one from Fiat dealer round the back of me quoted £62 + drat two months ago
