Not sure if it's been mentioned on here, but apparently DVLA are in a spot of bother because of the Covid crisis and yesterday a further extension to driving licence renewals was announced.

So for anybody who needs to renew their licence by 31 December 2020, they are having eleven months added automatically to their existing entitlement. Which I guess applies to me, because I was due to re-apply for my '70-year old' licence later this year.

Extension for driving licences expiring between 1 February and 31 December 2020
If your photocard driving licence or your entitlement to drive expires between 1 February 2020 and 31 December 2020, you have an 11-month extension from the date of expiry. This means that you will not need to renew your photocard or entitlement to drive until 11 months after your original expiry date. You do not need to do anything as this extension is automatic.

Am I right in thinking that this means my OH (70 in November), will have a stay of execution on his C1?

I scraped into the MOT 6-month extension by one day.

I miss this one by 5 days - can't win them all.

Geoff
I've managed to benefit from both the MOT extension and the licence extension! ;) (y)

But I'm wondering how it will work out with the driving licence when trying to hire cars abroad? I suspect the expiry date may not be noticed, but it's a bit of a gamble. Covid-permitting, we are hoping to be renting cars this coming winter and next spring.

I'm assuming so, because that's the position I'm in.

Good luck explaining an out of date licence abroad

As there are several threads on here regarding C1 renewal, I have contacted DVLA via their webchat service.

Below is a transcript of the webchat. Hope it clarifies the matter.

Enquiry: Retaining C1 at 70 years
Virtual Assistant (2:20:11 PM):Thank you, you’ve been added to a queue.

Thanks for your patience.
Natasha is your new agent for the chat session.

Natasha (2:28:49 PM):Hi, you're through to Natasha. Please hold a moment while I read through the chat details.

Natasha (2:29:58 PM):Thank you for your patience. Can I confirm you would like to renew your C1 entitlement?

You (2:30:28 PM):I am a member of an online motorhome forum. There are quite a few members who require to renew their driving licences to include the C1 category at age 70 (or subsequent renewals).

Is there any alternative to the Forms D2/D4 paper application?

Natasha (2:31:28 PM):Unfortunately no. I can issue the required forms out to you. Please see below how to proceed with the application.

Driving licence holders who passed their car test before 1 January 1997 normally have higher entitlements (namely, C1 and D1). However, these entitlements end when the licence holder reaches the age of 70 years.

If you wish to keep these higher entitlements we recommend that you check with your doctor to make sure you can meet the higher medical standards for driving these vehicles.

You will need to complete a D2 application form and a D4 medical report.

You can get them from selected Post Offices® that offer driving licence transactions.

You can also download a D4 form online.

Who can complete the D4?
The D4 has to be completed by a doctor and you should ensure that all the relevant questions are completed.

Remember:

To enclose your driving licence with your application

No fee is required

You don’t need to send ID unless you’ve had a change in your name since the last licence was issued. For information on what ID to send and how this will be returned, please see the advice here

Where should I send my application?
DVLA

<IF CRITICAL WORKER>

DVLA

Paper applications sent to the DVLA are taking longer to progress and there are delays. This is because we have a reduced number of staff on site to comply with social distancing requirements.

You (2:32:35 PM):Thanks Natasha,

Natasha (2:33:08 PM):You're welcome and thank you for your enquiry. If needed, the 'save chat' button will still be available after the chat has ended. Have a lovely day. Goodbye.

I had my medical in in early April licence expired at the end of May, a a few letters later... I was 73 in June and my moho is a 7.5 tonner, a few signed letters later I had a letter last week with a new licence valid until 17th August 2021, i still have C1 and all the others i had before.

Does that mean your c1 is extended?

I think we have to bear in mind that there are two ways of being able to drive a vehicle up to 7.5 tons...

(a) by passing your test before 1st January 1997 (Grandfather rights) This 'right' expires on your 70th birthday unless you apply to retain it.

(b) by passing an additional driving test, (hgv, psv, etc). These are Vocational licences and need to be renewed at set intervals according to your age. These renewals normally have to be accompanied by form D4 medical.

I have been informed previously by DVLA and this is reinforced by this page....

that it is these Vocational Licences that can have a 12m extension without D4.

The above link also contains this...

This notice does not apply to any application to renew small lorry (C1) and minibus (D1 (101)) entitlements included on car licences issued before 1997.

My licence runs out on the 19th of this month. I have been waiting for it for eight weeks. I will print off theDVLA page saying that it as been extended for 11 months. Whilst I was wating for my C1. I printed section 88 of the road tragic act saying that I could drive whilst my licence was being processed
Than if stopped by the Police I would have showed them the print off.

No it ran out a year ago. I had a treadmill test and my licence only ran for another year. It is due to run out on the 19th of this month. I had to apply 8 weeks ago, I’m still waiting for it to be returned. So this extension suits me.

I have just renewed my licence which had expired in July. I’ve got C1 but a few years off 70 yet, so not an issue this time. Applied online on the Sunday and had a new licence by Thursday. A brilliant service and well done DVLA.
