Hi guys just been reading the new government proposed road charging for motorhomes/ caravans, of 75p to a pound a mile to drive your leisure vehicles,
has anyone else read about this.?

No, surely they can’t charge that extortionate price?
Have you a link to the information?

On top of fuel prices, I hope not, That'll £750 to £1000 to drive to dover and back. Gotta be wrong.... I hope

This could be it

Looks like a very old story. Mention of the 5 year tax on luxury vehicles but no mention of Covid

It did mention Covid when I read it:...........2nd para

Chris Hargreaves reports…

Over the past decade the government has frozen fuel tax duty at 57.95p which the Treasury believes has saved the average mileage driver £1,200.

Due to the significant spending by government during the Covid-19 pandemic, it is believed a rise in fuel tax duty of around 2p or 3p is now being considered to generate extra income in the short term.

you would either need a toll booth on every single road or fuel price go up and everyone who uses pays.

cant see any other way.

mileage at MOT - last MOT miles ( fidle the speedo no mile done)

Indeed it is.

If they don't already, anyone living within 50 miles of a channel port the introduction of any pay per mile scheme would find it a very good reason to tour abroad.

If I can only tour abroad...the motorhome is for sale

Apologies poor speed reading on my part

April the first aside can anyone see the potential of a *disconnect speedo, use a sat nav* to by pass the charging or a potential goldmine in Faraday cages..................any dragons out there?

OBD2 and software will do the trick. or i am sure within a short space of time you could send the dash cluster for " REPAIR"

So basically it was just one bloke who is part axe grinder and part nutter who suggested 75p a mile

Waste of a good thread ! LOL !!! :-)

IF it were to happen how will it be policed and charged.
WHEN it happens, it will be policed and charged by a 'black box' in your car and backed up by ANPR.

Countries such as Austria have had the system in place for several years already for commercial vehicles on their motorways.
Where the UK Government could be clever is if they link the charging to congestion.
Travel around the M25 at 9am cost will be £1/per mile, travel at 9pm cost will be 50p per mile.

All European Governments currently make a large percentage of their revenue on liquid fuel tax. This tax is due to fall by 90% or so over the next two decades, they have to have a replacement based on distance travelled.
Mileage cost is the logical and fairest alternative.

So the current Government, whoever they might be at that time, introduce a 75p per mile charge for driving.

The Opposition vow to repeal it if they are elected.

Who will win the election?

We have a system here called SALIK. One buy's a electronic stick on inside windscreen tag bought from petrol stations with a one time form to fill, etc etc, when you go under a toll bridge x amount is deducted from your pre paid tag. Your phone is updated and a msg is sent each time you go under a toll bridge and lets you know your balance to allow you to top up as and when needed. It works quite well.
Only on specific roads. Fines are excessive if you don't get a tag.

There is or was a similar system on the A1 into Paris, tolls in the rush hour were more expensive than in quieter periods.

If your Driving an EV your not paying for Petrol or Diesel, so no Fuel Tax the Government will want to charge you per mile, and in the dystopian world these new cars will be trackable so not just how far you have drivel but your location at any time. You may just want to hang on to that ICE vehicle for as long as you can.

To be fair, the technology to track you and each one of your vehicles is only a breath away already

The tech to charge you for it us here now

It is the politics that will delay it, more than anything, and the politics that will set the initial price

what's more likely - not that was, is a 'leisure vehicle' tax as in Holland. Motorhomes are circa 1/3 more than it's neighbours due to the tax.
