After the current round of Motorhome viewings I am surprised at the number of Motorhomes which don't have an alarm fitted. So I thought I would ask the question.....

Can't get insurance without an alarm apart from NFU but they won't cover Croatia and twice the price of my current insurer.

Mine has an alarm /immobiliser.
Insurance companies like alarms but I'm very doubtful whether they achieve anything. Every alarm I've heard going off has been ignored. Same with house alarms.

No alarm just standard Ducato immobiliser

Standard Peugeot Boxer alarm/imobiliser

I have had 12 motorhomes and all but 2 had alarms fitted when I bought them (and those 2 had them added - one being the latest acquisition). Looking for the latest Van and 6/7 that we looked didn't have one fitted which piqued my interest to see if it was the norm. I understand Dealers don't warranty the alarms so rarely mention them on the particulars but these were vans we went to see at Dealers.

I was just about to take the poll when I thought 'hang on, should I really post on a public forum that my motorhome does or doesn't have an alarm'.
Call me cautious but I just don't trust technology nowadays

Mine sits next to me.

Current Autotrail Savannah has a Sigma alarm and standard Fiat immobiliser.

New van will have a @Vanbitz Growler and Tracker plus standard Fiat immobiliser.

You need another option on your poll.

Mine would be "yes, when I get round to building and fitting an alarm". By next year it should be done !

Agree about alarms being ignored, but if you link the alarm to a tracker so when alarm goes off get an alert with the van location and the sensor triggered, followed by a call from the centre, they can be useful.

Standard Fiat immobiliser plus Swift tracker (which works well as I got a phone call from the tracker people very shortly after I accidently switched a fuse off when trying to work the electrics out for the first time!)

Most insurance companies give you a discount if you have an alarm. I advised Comfort I have an alarm but don't use it when parked up at home on the driveway. We live in a cul-de-sac and it's a devil of a job getting it out at the best of times with all the parked cars.

Comfort's response was, in that case you can't claim the discount as you need to keep the alarm activated 24/7 when it's parked. So, presumably if you don't have it alarmed and the van gets nicked, the insurance is invalid? Unless of course the thieves disable the alarm before they nick it !!!

We have the same, as could not get new van insured without Alarm & Fully active tracker, which was annoying as it delayed us picking up the new van for just over a month due to Vanbitzes popularity and there appt diary was fully booked.
Some say expensive, but I say reliable and belt & Braces, touch wood no false alarms as yet.

It still amazes me that such an expensive item can be allowed to be sold in The UK, without some form of insurance recognised alarm system. The excuse given is that foreign manufacturers dont have to recognise or conform to "The Thatcham" category of alarm standards which I feel is just Bulls##t. If I but a German BMW, Audi, or VW it come with a "Thatcham Approved" Alarm, so why not motor homes.
They also dont come with smoke or carbon monoxide detectors or a fire extinguisher in most cases, which I believe for the first two items makes the van not NCC compliant, hence why all British built vans have them as standard. This may be as they are built in Britain they have to conform, whereas Foreign vans dont. There should be one safety standard for all vans travelling on UK and EU Roads I would like to think.
Or am I missing something, like another "Relevant" Excuse?

None, just standard immobiliser. Alarms scare me, but not the rogues. And yes, if you declare you have an alarm but don't use it, you may not be covered it van stolen. I don't know how they would know, though. But I have never declared an alarm if fitted.

Sort of true 're alarms but most high value cars over 50k the insurer will require a tracker to be fitted. Amazes me that 90% of these vehicles do not come with a tracker. Also over 50% of these sold, the dealer does not mention this.
I have lots of clients ring me to insurer their brand new motor only to be told by me need a tracker before driving off forecourt.

Yes it’s a transit!
Courtesy of Mr Eddievanbitz!

Vanbitz Strikeback and Non-starter. Couldn't stretch to the Growler after buying the motorhome :(

Alarm and tracker as required by Adrian Flux, insurance broker. Alarm goes off regularly when we forget to disable it. Tracker has history of where we have been.

I voted no, but I suspect the base vehicle comes with an immobiliser of sorts.

It doesn’t have keyless ignition, which I don’t like and certainly would not pay extra for. If it did I’d be considering a non starter.
