On the Castleton campsite tonight walking round I notice that 70% of the vans I see have there TV antenna in what I would call standing up position (face into wind) mines in the laying down position. I have done ok signal wise and its pulled about 30 channels. (still cant get my Satellite dish to work )

Does it ever make much of a difference. I mean the option is clearly there to use. I just dont have enough experience I guess and dont really care enough to spend the time retuning and trying different angles and all that.

It depends upon the tv transmitter you’re pointed at - main or primary transmitters transmit horizontally polarised signals - aerial horizontal, whilst secondary transmitters transmit vertically polarised signals - aerial vertical…….I think! Or it may be the other way around. ;)
It’s to stop the transmitted signals interfering with each other, so it’s best to know which transmitter, and it’s signal orientation that your aerial is pointed at…..

A good tip someone on a site told me was to look at other antennas to see which way they are facing and what orientation the top bit is in.
Until we got the current motorhome I didn’t know how to tilt ours. Trying to watch the tv in the van next to us wasnt easy especially when they closed the curtains.

Reminds me of Jim Royle on holiday in The Royle Family 😂

Watched a chap adjusting his aerial for hours recently on one site up North.
Called me over when he saw me in morning to ask what sort of aerial I was using because he could not believe how good a picture I was getting.
Had to confess that we were watching DVD's all night. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I just use wi-fi and my fire stick..BUSBY.

I also look at the way others are facing, If there arnt any to compare I auto tune and if nothing comes up I turn the arial a quarter turn and try again, I dont recall having to turn it many times before getting reception.

Looking at aerials on other vans is an exercise in futility.....
Many have tried to get a signal and failed, leaving the aerial where they last moved it to.

Look at aerials on houses in the area for direction and polarity ...they don't get moved once installed so should point the right way

What’s wrong with omnidirectional? You don’t need to turn anything. If there is signal, it will be picked up.

We use a phone app and a compass to get it spot on. We've been on sites where the warden has told us that the TV signal is poor and we've ended up with a reasonably strong signal and over 50 channels.
The best day we've had 203 channels, not that it matters to me but my Mrs can't be without it! :whistle2:
