Towballs that is before you lot go off getting excited or suggest this is the wrong forum. Got into a discussion with a guy towing a toad. He said he puts grease on his towball, another guy said he uses nothing. I said I use nothing but do occasionaly spray some white grease on or some silicon grease. What do you do with your balls. Remember this is a family forum. (y)

I don’t grease it because it makes removing and fitting it messier. It lives in a bag in the garage when not in use. However I do wonder if I should grease it occasionally.

I think the "no grease" comes from caravan couplings that use spring loaded friction pads on the ball as a stabiliser, obviously grease is not good for friction.

If it wasn't a friction pad I would grease as they can and do wear and at the extreme they can become detached.

I don’t but maybe a smear of an oily rag wouldn’t hurt  and if you ever use a Alko tow hitch with anti sway, you should never use grease on them.

As Martin says if you have an old fashioned hitch you grease the ball otherwise the ball will wear, suprising how quick they ware if not greased and get dangerously undersize. With a stabiliser hitch you must not get grease anywhere near it or the stabiliser won't work.

As Lenny said, it's two metallic surfaces in contact. To reduce wear it is essential to lubricate and a smear of grease will do nicely. So if it's a toad or trailer behind then it should be lubricated.

If it's a friction coupling such as a bike rack, then any lubrication would not be good :)

All depends on what's attached to the towball.

More than toes wet now!
When we had a caravan with Alko tow hitch towball was cleaned every couple of weeks with a rag and some brake cleaner to ensure friction pads remained clean.
Now we only drag a garden trailer around so towball is greased for the reasons above.

As all the others have said. It was a pain when we were tuggers the ball needed to be clean for the caravan hitch but when we put the trailer on the car grease from the hitch would contaminate it.

One school says grease/oil them the other says the grease/oil attracts dust ,especially here , & creates more wear.

We have a standard hitch for towing a small trailer carrying our scooter and keep it greased to reduce wear to the ball and tow hitch.

When the trailer is not in use the tow ball wears a cover to protect from the grease.

I fit a white aerosol can top on mine with the reversing camera aimed at it - it makes reversing easier. If parking up I leave a 'marker' on the ground to help when returning.:)
