Can any body recommend a damp meter for checking out damp in my motor home looked on ebay lots on there and different prices. Not sure what to go for

I would buy a "non invasive" damp meter - CEM DT 128 was recommended a few years ago on here.

I don't think they make it now but something like it must be available.

You are looking for a reading of less than 20% - that is when the industry accepts repairs are required.

15% and they would probably recommend you come back in a couple of months or so.

You may get in one spot a very high reading but you are looking for a consistent % across an area.

Check around every window/door/lower edge of the walls/ the interior surface of every exterior joint.

Remember the meter was designed for checking plaster walls/wood moisture content etc not motorhomes.

So an extremely high or low reading in one spot might not be damp but a dense fixing behind the wall. Check again a few inches either side to see if it repeated.

Some motorhomes are built with impervious interior surfaces and I am not sure how this meter would perform on those. Hopefully someone with more experience will be on shortly.

We have this one and to be honest ...It gave the exact same readings as our dealership's tool did ! Good enough for us

You really don't want to use either of those on a Morirhome unless you like pinholes.
Far better to use the non invasive/paddle tyre a bit dearer won't do any damage and they measure a lot deeper up top 25mm.
You can get them from around £25 don't expect the same accuracy as a £400 professional one.

Thats true regarding pin holes...However...I was always told to check for the obvious. If the seal around a doorway is wet ...you can normally guarantee that 2 inches up and in will be too! A couple of pin holes at 25 notes is fine by me as long has it tells me where its damp and what to steer clear from. I'm sure the non invasive type is better but the prong type has worked well for a long time in industry now and will do so for a lot longer.
Common sense and a little thought and you wont know where you have checked it out.

I have had one of these for a few years now.. Non invasive, no pin holes..

My view is that you will check the van and get some average readings, if you find an area that is reading high compared to the rest then it obviously needs more investigation. Your not looking for accurate % readings, your not filing a report ;). In past years I had a "watertrail" and after each years habitation check i used to check my cheapo meter against the readings stated on the hab report.. It was never far away, maybe 2% if that...
