Hi there, is anyone been living in a motorhome in Crete? we are thinking to stay there during winter but all campsites are closed and we are wondering where we can empty our waste and top up water? Anyone can share any experience and information?

If you have a look at the thread titled Greece 2022 PhilandMena went across to Crete this Summer, they may be able to advise on winter in Crete.
I'm sure you'll always get water from somewhere but emptying the black waste may be more difficult.
By the way. w2f

Edit : Another thread to look at is Tams winter escape. He traveled down and spent the winter in Greece and always managed to find water and waste facilities

Hi, that's not quite right! Contact Camping Grammeno and they should confirm they are open all winter. As best as I can recall from my conversation with Chris at the campsite it's 290 euros a month plus electricity.

The app CamperContact shows 5 or 6 sites open in December and January.

Might see you there as we are hoping to head to Crete for the winter. Been there loads of times and love the place but never in the van.

I lived in Crete for 17years. It pretty much shuts down in the winter from a tourism point of view. I'm not saying there aren't any sites open, but I would be checking my information very carefully. Having said that, the OP will probably find sites that will let you on if you can find the owner/manager. It's all pretty laid back.

I’m on camping grammeno now and can confirm it’s open all year. They have a big social room which they use over the winter also note its about 5km from Paleochora so a bike or ???? would help. Believe they had a lot of indifferent weather last winter even snow in march. Camping no problem (great site) closers down over winter but might let you pitch up. Easy walk into again galini

Lovely little beach there with those scented white daffodil like flowers in the sand…love Paleochora as well…very envious!

If you're going to Crete in search of winter sun you may be disappointed. January February can be very wet and quite cold in Greece even in Crete. Better than here though. :giggle:

Hi there, thank you for your information but I have forgot to add that I need to stay in Chania because my daughter going to school there and I can not find anything around all year open, another question if I can stay longer then 6 months with my EU passport or I would need to leave with my motorhome or there is option to pay some fees or tax to stay longer?

I think you are required to break your stay at 90 days by entering another country, probably best done by plane. The big question is , would there be the will to enforce it/ do you feel lucky?

Or just register for residency after the 90 days if you have an EU passport?

Thats a bit drastic if you just want to visit for 6 months?

Tbf That always has been the problem with the current arrangements, there's nothing between 90 days and applying to live there. I wonder if thats why there are so many Ozzies in UK?

Sort of. But if you have an EU passport, I don't think there is much to it? You don't have to stay. 🙂

No but AFAIK you should not be in the same state for more than 90 days, which isnt the easiest from Crete.
That's why I suggested residency. Then you wouldn't have to hop out. I just meant that applying for residency wasn't that hard if you have an EU passport, and that you don't have to stay forever just because you got residency.

So If I'm gonna apply for residency is it mean that I can drive on Uk plate with my campervan and do not need to register it?

you would have to change everything over including tax status and licence etc, so total overkill for 6 months.

sorry Bloodieopl , my content is coming up as your quote and I cant change it

My sister applied for Greek Residency on Crete.
She needed to employ a solicitor to help do the paperwork (unless you are fluent in legal Greek).
She also needed an address, which as to be a real one that pays the local council tax and is not registered as a holiday home.
And you need utility bills including the local council tax in your name.

She did a deal with a local Greek friend, where he sub-let the flat off her, but she was the lead tenant and officially in residence.

She was actually living in her UK registered van.
Which as long as the van is legal (UK tax and MOT and insurance), which does mean that the van needs to return home at least once a year.

Unfortunately the entire plan got messed up due to the pandemic.
However I think she will head back out there this winter (or in the spring) and try again.

If you have an EU passport then you can stay as long as you like, any EU citizen has the right to live and work in any of the EU countries, the famous freedom of movement rule👍

You get either 6 months or a year on UK plates. Can't remember which. Obviously you need to look closely at what is needed for residency. I don't remember it being that tricky, but things change. Or just go back to hopping out to another country for a couple of days after the 90. All this presumes you are on an EU passport not UK.

You still have to register as a resident after 90 days. It's not quite that free.

Not when the op has a EU passport as he has mentioned.

Yes you register but that is not an issue isn’t it? They cannot point you to the door, as you have a right to live and work in any EU country, and yes you have to register, get your driving licence changed, register your car etc, but that seems normal if you settle anywhere?
This is off course if you properly want to settle, also if you just want to have a very long holiday then no one is going to stop you.

Well, that's exactly what I was saying earlier in the thread. So we agree. 🙂

police can stop me and confiscate my motorhome if it's been there for over 6 months, but not sure if they really do it in Greece, this is what the law is stated in Greece anyway, this is what I am trying to find out if I can just hooping out for few days to a different country and then back to Greece again and stay another 6 months legally? If they actually checking it at the border?

This is what I found
Not sure if it is really a case with Police in Greece, if they really forcing it?
So it is mean that after 6 months I need to take my car out of Greece for 12 months not just for few days but really?

"How to import new or used car to Greece Foreign cars and motorcycles may be temporarily imported into Greece for up to six months. After six months, the vehicle must either: Be imported into Greece and may not be used until it is on Greek plates Be re-exported from Greece Be sealed (bonded) with customs for at least six months (but no more than 24 months). After this period, the owner must be able to prove that they have been out of the country for at least 12 months in order to be granted another six months of use in Greece Owners of vehicles temporarily imported into Greece must be able to present the registration and ownership documents, if requested by the competent authorities. They should also be able to prove when they brought the vehicle into Greece. The vehicle may only be used by the owner and their spouse or children. There are some exceptions, where individuals may import a vehicle for private use for longer than six months, without paying import duties and taxes. These include: Students in further education Individuals on a fixed term contract with the Greek state Teaching staff on a fixed term contract with higher education institutes Diplomatic and Consular staff and their employees"
