I'm a newbie
We are looking for our new van, and thought we might look at the NEC. Does this show get really busy with people from all over the country as I'm immune suppressed and am worried about being in contact with a lot of people?

I think it gets pretty busy so I guess there is always a risk.

How big a risk is your call.

Unfortunately a show like this is ideal for spreading a virus.

We are going anyway. The reality is that the risk is low.

If you are worried about it then it might not be an enjoyable experience. There are a lot of people there and there are congested bits where it will be as busy as a rush hour tube train. Also there will be a lot of people looking in each van so handrails getting into vans and cupboard catches etc will be touched thousands of times that is where the risks are. So gloves might be a good idea. But all that said, Personally I wouldn't worry about it because the figures are so low. Plenty of hand gel and I'm sure it will be fine. No one can make a decision for you though.

It appears that the elderly community in general, i.e. most of us, are particularly at risk as below!

If, as you say you are immune supressed, the safe option may be your best. There will be other shows later, and by then the level of risk will (hopefully) be better quantified?.

I, personally would go, but I am in reasonable health, no Chest / Lung Issues, even though 76. Which is where the big risk factor is reported to be (pneumonia risk). That I am not going, is only down to not needing to. I have plans to possibly go the the "Classic Car Show" later.

As I was posting this the above post came up which seems to bear out what I said.

The risk from coronavirus in the UK is currently negligible but the risk from other bugs, particularly flu and the common cold is as high as ever.

Wash your hands regularly especially before eating anything and avoid touching your mouth at other times is the best advice. A face mask won't do much but they do reduce the risk from touching your own mouth though.

Only you can decide if the risk is worth it but the risk is more likely to come from something less exotic than coronavirus.

Only you can make that decision. If you’re immuno-suppressed the stakes are obviously higher. You’ll have read all the advice so I guess it comes down to how risk averse you are.

Can I suggest the Peterborough Motorhome Show? basically an outdoor event and lots to see.
A big Funster event as well, get to meet a few of the people.
Only a couple of months to wait

My wife was immune suppressed due to Chemotherapy. I don't know if yours is similar. She was advised not to be going to shopping malls and any built up places.I wouldn't recommend NEC.Way too busy.

I have numerous bloomin' illnesses and am going got plenty of handgel and I could always breakout the old facemask if there's lots of people from the affected parts of the world there but most people will be like most of us
Caucasian and older people

Jim's post is pretty encouraging.
Only 0.88% of the 1100 tested where tested positive.
My guess is most of those had just returned from China.

Lots of people are killed each year crossing the road. If you are willing to take the risk of crossing the road then I'm sure that you will have a better chance of survival at the NEC.?

Get it into perspective, current death rate is 10% but that’s based on hospital admissions, so only the most severely affected, generally people with compromised cardiovascular or respiratory systems. Thousands of others simply suffer the symptoms at home and eventually recover. That’s really not much different to bog standard flu which kills thousands of people in the UK annually, mostly aged 65+ with health issues. If you’ve got health issues you might want to stay away, otherwise it’s probably not something that should restrict getting on with your life on the basis that getting up in the morning also carries a risk!

I read ( bbc news article?) that hand sanitiser is NOT efficient- soap and water is the best way of cleaning hands to avoid catching it ..just saying.

This really makes sense....

Taking children to school
We recommend that you stay at home for 14 days after arriving from Wuhan or Hubei Province (or elsewhere in China if you have symptoms), and avoid public places. Where possible, contact a friend or family member to take your children to school.

You are advised to remain indoors to avoid public contact if you have just returned from certain counties.... China, Korea, Japan etc.
But its OK to shuffle your kids off to school.
To me that opens up the possibilies of it spreading via close contact with school friends.

Wouldn’t it be best to seek advice from your GP ?
This...
My assumption that mixing with crowds in a warm environment wouldn't be the best place even if there wasn't a coronavirus scare... but I've no medical training, so I'd be asking someone qualified, who knows your history.
And I'd echo the opinions that Peterborough being an outdoor show would be a safer bet.
Ask your doc.

GP will say “dont go”, I guarantee it
( Flu kills 50,000+ people a year...every year, most years it isnt all over the news)
That’s my thought,I have flu jab each year ,had flu once lost over a stone ,not good.

Who knows where we will be with this virus in a couple of months time, the only certainty will be that Corona will still be around and possibly far more serious than it is now. Not to mention our industry and economy. We rely on China for most of our manufacturing and economy, if China is still held up then so will our car, and spare parts and everything else industry. The pound could plummet our economy could collapse. Who knows where this disaster will be in two months time...:(

Interesting, that the guy at the forefront of the latest. Had nor even been to China?. He had been to a Conference in Singapore, went skiing in Switzerland? on his way home, where the Doctors from the Brighton surgery (closed yesterday) had been infected!.
