Corfe Castle Info/feedback.

Hi All,
just been told by Mrs T that she has booked us into the CCC site at Corfe Castle for a week in mid May. Has anyone been there? Any feedback, places to visit, good ideas, etc. We will probably be taking Pug Toad.

As always, any info greatfully appreciated.

Funnily enough we've just come back! Don't know where your site is but we spent three nights at CC Haycrafts site which was excellent. We left Addie parked up and walked to the nearby Harmans Cross station and caught the lovely steam train to Corfe, ten minutes away, getting a discount by buying our tickets from the campsite. Tickets for walking round the Corfe Castle ruins were £7.72 each, as weather was gorgeous we spent about an hour and a half wandering round, there are lovely views from up there. There is a tiny museum not far from the National Trust shop; opposite the museum is the Model Village (didn't visit this) and a nice little cafe which did tasty crab sandwiches.

Apparently there is a ghost village called Tyneham in the vicinity, the government took this over during the war supposedly temporarily but the inhabitants were never allowed to return.

Next day we caught the steam train in the opposite direction to Swanage, again about ten minutes. Went to the tourist office and bought a pack of walks (£1) you can do round the town - town walk, stone walk and victorian walk. First two take about three quarters of an hour, last one two hours (didn't do the last one, might be the most interesting). Not loads to see on them and discovered they were published in 2000 so some of it was out of date! But it does give you a tour around.

There are probably loads of other things to do in the area but we were only there for two days. Hopefully someone else will be able to help you, hope you have a good time.

Excellent walks from the site. Try walking across the ridge from Corfe to swanage or studland bay. Both are a good walk with excellent views so catch the bus back to Corfe.

Scones & Cream in the national trust tea room next to the castle.

Get a 1:25000 OS map of the area shows a few walks.

We stayed at C&CC Corfe Castle in September 2013 and found it very pleasant - well up to C&CC standards. As I recall the last bit of lane leading to the site is seriously narrow but we didn't have a problem.

Corfe Castle itself is well worth visiting of course and its only about a 15-20 minute walk from the site through very pleasant countryside.

When you have had your fix of history I can recommend the 'Castle Tea' at the nearby National Trust tearoom - cucumber sandwiches, cakes, tea etc. The village itself is nice to walk round with several shops including a small supermarket.

Well worth a visit..... It is used to play war games... well the live firing from Tanks is done near by, hence it is closed most of the time..

Tyneham is open when the mob have annual summer leave and on some bank holiday`s.. there is a path to the village and you are not allowed to stray from the path.. (Maybe Live Ammo laying around)..

Not been for many years, so things may have changed..

Kimmeridge Bay, Lulworth Cove, Worth Matravers and the other one LOL, Old Harry, Peveril Point, Durlston 'chine' - and I'm damn sure there is a Minster somewhere, and in its village is a darn good pub with ditto meals.

The chain ferry across from Studland to the end of Sandbanks is worth it, as is Compton Acres.

Definitely recommend Tyneham. Quite a bit has been rebuilt and restored. It has also been a film set ( Far from the madding crowd was one) From there you can walk to Worbarrow Bay. Corfe Castle and Swanage are very pretty and Wareham is also quaint. Dorset is just a lovely place to relax and chill out.
