Help please. We’ve broken down in France. Clutch… we had a new one fitted 2month ago but the local garage back in the UK had a nightmare finding the correct one, I’m thinking they didn’t. I’ve searched myself for a clutch on line but the list is endless. how do I know which is the correct base vehicle and engine? 1995 Hymer B694 L/H Drive, Fiat Base Tag axle.

What engine size.? Should also be a chassis number on a plate.

What are the problems you are having with it?

thanks for taking a look. I’ve done a search on AutoDoc they have lots of clutch kits on there. it’s very difficult to work out which one. The first hurdle is that the Engine is the 2500 turbo diesel but there are different KW and HP’s. I’m pretty certain the clutch has failed, I’m trying to make sure there is an available replacement. We broke down on the motor way after disembarking off the Ferry, we’ve been taken to the recovery compound till they can look at it on Monday.

You need the full engine number to guarantee the correct parts, different engines can be fitted to different chassis so engine number is the definitive way for the right parts,

Thanks for that. I assume the engine number is somewhere stamped on the engine itself or is it on a plate in the engine bay?

Yes it will be, it may be in your log book( registration document) but usually doesn’t give the full number, my Renault Master engine is a G9U632 that tells me it’s cubic capacity and 148HP output,
But there are at least 6 other engines used in the same chassis with different clutch sizes and HP outputs, that’s why the engine number is the most important one to have for correct engine parts,

Engine type would be shown on the Fiat chassis plate, possible on the front panel near the bonnet lock.
What symptoms have you got, because it could be slave cylinder if hydraulic

Are you sure it's the clutch - it seems odd that it worked for a couple of months before it failed. What are the symptoms?

It’s cable actuated. The cable is not broken. The lever that it operates has no tension on it, when you move it manually it doesn’t operate the clutch but you can hear a noise from inside the housing.

Still maybe not the clutch itself, but you find out when gearbox removed. Good luck with it all 👍

It sounds like it may well be the clutch thrust bearing that has failed.

The garage In Lille fitted another new clutch kit €850 (see the recently fitted one they took out). 800km down the road it’s failed, as you can imagine we’re not best pleased and struggling with the stress of it all. I can only think that the wrong clutch keeps on being fitted. Any thoughts?

Well it doesn’t look like it’s got hot, bent the fingers by the look of it, must be to much throw or jamming up some how?, so yes wrong parts, strange how it can be put together if that’s the case.

Thoughts, crack on and enjoy the rest of your trip. Nothing to gain stressing and thinking about what has happened.

Is it the clutch that you have just had fitted in Lille that has failed?

The new replacement clutch has failed also?

By my reading, the new clutch has also failed. Cracking on isn’t an option.

OP is showing as a Free member does that mean he has run out of posts as he has done 5?

With having another kit fail, maybe it’s a problem with the thrust bearing lever, bent or broken.

Reading this again, if the clutch is stuck in the release position then the lever would go floppy on the return and you would be able to move it manually, you wouldn't be able to actuate the lever by hand normally.

I see that the clutch you had fitted is a Borg &Beck it was a very reputable clutch supplier years ago
But was taken over and their quality plummeted,
I would only use Genuine OE clutches, LUK/ Valeo Or Fiats own, definitely worth paying the extra for quality when it comes to Clutches and brakes,

If the
I think he means that the one just fitted has now also packed up
if the new one in lille has failed as well I would come home. I know it might be obvious but is it overloaded and you’re slipping the clutch ?
