I read an article this week in a newspaper about lorry drivers having a litter picking group who when stopped for a break in a lay by spent it picking up the litter one driver stated he found it very relaxing and full filling to see a clean lay by when he left. I have also done this while the wife makes the tea and food for the stop my record is two full black bags, do any other (FLT's do this:cool:) or normal campers

I definitely wouldn't put most of the detritus that I've seen in laybys in my vehicle.

Started picking up litter when we wilded for a couple of nights on the Yorkshire moors last year, drew the line at all the discarded tissues.

Yes, we often pick up other folk's rubbish. We do it when wildcamping and generally when out walking.

In laybys It's all those bottles of truck driver's tizer that would put me off picking up.

I don't take it home and I use litter picking tongs normally there are litter bins in lay bys and i put the bags either in them or if full beside them and if they are full the local authority number is on the bin give them a ring and remind them we are still paying council tax

I collect litter at my local dog walking woods.
Always a full bag. Got my litter grabber and bag ring. Always shocked at the amount of baby / wet wipes I pick up.
Got two litter grabbers will put one in motorhome now.

Yes.... laybys are in a league of their own and not to be tackled without donning a hazmat suit!

I reckon we are silent majority there's more of us than you think, we quietly go about the business of cleaning up the environment no matter where we are, it would be good if the Government set up an initiative whereby all these folk registered and were issued with a badge or similar so others would recognise you as being part of something and help it grow, I regularly carry a bag when walking my Dog and people look at me like I some sort of weirdo, yes I know I look like that without the bag :D2

a Government Initiative would definitely get others involved and it would be National and perhaps the Litter Tossers would resist a little.

In France I've seen a few of these.

The sign calls it a Bac a Maree and is for rubbish people pick up on the beach.

At home where we live in a Devon lane a neighbour and I regularly collect the coffee cups and other rubbish thrown out of cars.

Its shocks me to see how many lay byes dont have any litter bins, some even have notices asking you to take your litter home.
We wild camped overnight in a large lay bye in Scotland, beautiful place (Innerleithen) A72 on the side of the river Tweed, and quiet at night, I could not relax looking out the hab door at all the take away litter, cans & bottles strewn everywhere. I collected most of it and placed it in a very full waste bin which was on a metal frame thus only allowing the lid to be partially opened.
we have done this in some very remote places also, where I think to myself how long would that stay there before someone like me came along.
I must get a set of those litter picker tools, its a shame we have to do this, but some people just dont give a care about littering everywhere they go, even kids in front of parents:mad:

We were sitting in a car park at a beach this morning and a guy got out of his car with a little boy about 10 and also 2 labador sized dogs which were not on any leads.
Well right infront of the dad and young kid one dog capped on the sand dune beside the car park.
The adult man went over, stood beside it, then looked around to see if anyone seen, then used his foot to push sand just over the top of the dogs crap,
Apart from being a lazy dirty rubbish, what sort of example is this guy setting to the kid, who I'd say was most likely his son.
And no I never said anything as he was twice my size ^^

So is the people who drop the litter or the council for not cleaning up after them , which one is the villain.

Those who drop, the council aren't there to be the nations "keepers" and walk around after the lazy so and so's. The money they spend is better used providing adult care, schools, libraries, public parks and recreation areas, children's social services and all the rest of the stuff that they just quietly get on with day in / day out (24/7 in some cases).

As far as I'm concerned both the number of times I've stopped at a lay by full of litter usually because the bins are over flowing and obviously have not been emptied for weeks and yes the council do have a legal duty to collect rubbish much as they try and avoid it and in this case it comes out of the highway budget so does not affect adult care libraries social services etc trhis statement could have come straight from the local councils mis direction of information to pull the wool over general public its an excuse

Baby wipes are full of non recyclable plastic..Should be banned.BUSBY.

So where do the highways get their money from ?

What gets me angry is people who leave their trash on the bench seat or on the floor when there's a bin right next to the bench.
On my morning walk I pass a pub called the anchor bankside its a Greene king brewery pub . From the pub to the river it's just a few metres , when the weather's good or its the weekend loads of drinkers take their drinks out and sit on the wall running along the river. In the morning there can be hundreds of plastic pint containers and glass pint glasses left on the wall and floor . I'm not sure how many end up in the river . I have written to the brewery and basically they feel they do everything they can and Southwark (our council) will clear it up. They dont appear too concerned about the amount of plastic ending up in the river. " We have recycle bins " which are in an enclosed space nowhere near the wall. Also the amount of money they must lose in the glasses being broken or ending up in the river.
The manager has been spoken to by another person and was told we are too busy to collect glasses .
My local pub is a busy place and I've never seen glasses left outside at night in all the years I've lived here.
I feel Greene King should be ashamed of themselves re the amount of glass and plastic going into the river .

If you are talking about laybys on the few major trunk roads then yes the tax payer funded Highways Agency have the responsibility. If you are talking the other 95% of the UK roads then it is the local council - https://www.gov.uk/guidance/litter-...o-keep-land-clear#cleaning-and-clearing-roads.

Surprising as it may seem the council highway's budget comes from the same pot as the adult care, libraries etc. pot - the pot topped up each year by Council Tax and business rates (not the magic fairies).

How often the bins are emptied varies by area I am sure but my statement has not come straight from the local council's mis-direction of information department (y). If your local area are failing in their responsibility then take it up with your local Councilor and ask them to sort it out.

more prosecution of litter louts needed, only punishment, should be to keep an area litter free for a minimum 6 months.
Have been surprised at the number of what look like 'responsible citizens' who jetizon rubbish. also plesently surprised by parents, whose language sometimes leaves a lot to be desired, wh teach there children to bin rubbish. we live just the right distance from a local shop for crisp and sweet packets to be empty as the pass our garden, but it is more often beer cans or lottery tickets we have to pick up.
I do pick up litter when we stop, sat in an aire in Belgium whils some lads in a car ate pizzas and threw remains and boxes on the ground then drove off, a fellow motorhomer had picked them up and put them in a bin before I could get to it.

from our taxs which are already allocated the money thats being cut from libraries etc is another budget having been a parish and district councilor I am well aware of where the money comes from and where its going or more to the point if it actually needed to be cut or not

If councils did not give planning permission so easily to Take Aways there would be much less rubbish. Most of our rubbish is McDonald's and KFC..BUSBY.

So all high ways money comes from central government then. I see.

Does central government pay for all the gritting lorries and the grit etc as well ?

It’s a difficult situation but a good way to achieve the objective of getting him/them to “Pick Up” without the fear of violence is to simply spout up with “ excuse me ? I can offer you a Doggy Bag if it helps,or similar and the situation is defused and invariably they will accept the bag and offer an excuse but they do clean up.

indirectly yes as you can tell by county and district councils claiming that the cuts from government central budget is the reason for cuts

How can other countries have a culture where litter is just not dropped and we can't.
There really needs to be some heavy duty fines .
As a kid we were always made to put it in a bin or carry it home , that's how it was.
