I've heard that too, but as the 'ingredients' aren't listed, where does that answer come from? You don't suppose car shampoo manufacturers would say that as a marketing ploy, do you.Salt in it

£8.43For washing I use whichever car shampoo I have to hand and same for polishing, but after a few years of using expensive black streak removers, we dropped on one just as good but tons cheaper. We buy it from the 99p chain of stores. Guess how much it costs?

Oooh its not just the salt content you need worry about. Washing up liquid contains a cocktail of things which make it undesirable as a screenwash additive or for washing the car.
Salt - Aids corrosion of bare metal
Surfactants - Wetting agent will help water capilliary behind seals and could penetrate poor paint finishes taking the salt with it.
Formaldehyde - Perishes rubber
Sodium Laury Sulphate - Makes it 'thick' and feel slick - Made from animal fat that will biodegrade and cause offensive odour.

Silky, a non abrasive paste from caravan shops.
About £3 or so a tub.
Damp cloth, rub on, polish off.
Job done.
