I have a HD tyre pump and I feel it's way to much for a cigar lighter socket so going to take it off the plug and fit crocodile clips.

Now is the centre connection the positive and then outer one the negative or other way around?

The centre one is normally the positive..

I think,

Red wires positive, blacks negative, if you get it wrong it might go backwards and you will get a FLAT:Rofl1::Rofl1::Rofl1:

Actually I think it will still pump:thumb:

could the socket vary depending on whether the vehicle is pos or neg earth?

A cigar socket is rated at at least 10amps so should not be a problem, check the appropiate fuse rating just to make sure.

showing your age now roger......when did you last see a modern car with pos earth.

RR.....if it came with a plug attached it should be ok.....99.9% of the time the center is pos...outer neg....so if you touch any metal bodywork it wont blow.
worst that should happen is you'll blow the cig socket fuse if it is too much for it.

carefull if its french though......they dont care which way round it is...(no offence yodeli):Rofl1::Rofl1::Rofl1:
