I`ve recently bought a Chromebook and I`m now thinking about how to charge it in the van.
It has what they call a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type C port that the charger plugs into.
The 230 volt charger has an output of 20 volts 2.25 A or 15 volts 3 A or 9 volts 3 A or 5 volts 3 A.
What`s going on there ?
I was hoping to get a charger to connect to 12 volts and up it to whatever was needed.
Am I going to be stuck using the supplied charger and will it be ok in the inverter ?
TIA

Most of the USB outlets for vans are 5v 2.1 amp they should charge it but it will take a lot longer than the mains charger.
Mains charger will be OK on a pure sine wave invertor and should be OK on a modified sine inverter.

It`s not an ordinary USB, smaller than standard and larger than a mini USB
DBK link has it nailed (y)

I think that's meant as the other end NOT the Chromebook socket (y)

Agree a standard 2.1 amp cigarette or fitted USB socket plus a C type lead will do the job, just going to be a little slower than the mains charger. Grandkids have 2 Chromebooks they bring with them in the motorhome and no issues to charge as above.

What make is your chromebook? I have Googles Pixelbook and had a thread about trying to find a better way of charging in the van. Standard USB charging wasn't supplying it enough power. I bought the thing linked by DBK and although it charges it fine it puts my hab battery voltage warning light on after a while.

With your inverter you may have more luck than me.

I thought about getting an inverter but thought it was a bit heavy handed given it's only for my chromebook that I am wanting it.

I get the socket confusion but it's absolutely pointless to convert 12v to 240v back to 12v to 5v (ie USB).

I have a Chromebook, the charging socket is USB-C

Agreed, that's why I was hoping to plug it into the 12 volt but was confused by the multiple volt output from the 230 v charger.
What do you plug yours into, just the standard 5volt usb ?

any USB C charger will work, but you need 3amps to charge properly. Plenty about but avoid the really cheap Chinese ones as they overheat

Just got an Anker one for MacBook Air. Works a treat and was only £18.

I think I`ll just try getting a type 3 USB cable and see how it performs plugged into the 2.1 amp usb phone charger socket (former cig lighter socket)
Thanks tonka

I have usb sockets on the hab side of my van... both standard & fast 2.1amp

But if your 12v is cigar style then you'll need something like this;

Fast USB or not... Chromebook is charged via USB, so inverters are a costly waste of energy.
