Just a little reminder. I came back from a trip to Spain and all tyres looked good. Getting ready for a short UK trip I did my usual checks and found one tyre at 34 psi and wouldn't inflate beyond that. On first inspections all looked good, sidewalls clean, no eggs, kerb scuffing etc. Lots of tread, no nails. On closer inspection of the treads, down at the bottom the tyre was splitting all round (almost) on the outside treads. Hopefully you can see this in the photo. Tyre was dated 2015 so was at end of normal life and a new one has been fitted. FYI, this is the third tyre in seven years I have had this happen or very similar. So keep an eye on those tyres if they are getting 6 years old, I'm just thankful it didn't seperate on a motorway in UK, France or Spain.

What make is it..?
It was a Landsail. Here's a photo of a Nexen from a few years ago, again age related, somehow this stayed inflated, it was the rumble noise that alerted me;

This may be a clearer photo of the Nexen.

The point of the topic was to point out to others its worth checking your tyres no matter the brand.

The Russian army use Chinese made on their vehicles and have come unstuck .Many failing under load and getting bogged down in muddy fields when they are supposed to be all terrain.

That's caused by the van sitting around doing nothing.

I guess the best way to avoid it is to use the van more

Fair point, I'm still working so getting a run every 4 weeks. The guideline of replace after 6-7 years would appear to be true no matter the brand.

Point 1 - Had my car MOTd yesterday and the mechanic pointed out that the tyres were starting to crack. Not in the tread valleys but the tread blocks themselves. They were fitted about 3 years ago and thanks to Covid have only done about 5K miles. The car has been used regularly but only for short trips. Yes they're Nexen! Several previous sets of Nexens have lasted 25K on the same car but in the same 3 year timespan so the tread was gone before they had chance to crack.
Point 2 - Using the vehicle regularly will help prevent flat spots but will not stop cracking due to UV damage as shown in the pictures. Short runs can do expensive damage to the engine due to condensation. Instead, a set of wheel covers will be very effective at preventing tyre cracks and are quite cheap. There have been several threads on the subject recently.
Point 3 - I understand that Michelin are now saying that their Campervan tyres now have a life of 10 years.

Checked all mine recently. Fronts were 2019 Continental Vanco Campers, rears mismatched 2013, spare 2003 so been sat there since new. Decided a matching new pair on the front would be good, so bought two more Vanco Campers at £138 each for that, put the 2019 ones on the back and one of the 2013's as the spare, filed as next year's problem. The improvement in ride quality and reduction in noise is remarkable.

The cracking on sidewalls is due to uv damage the cracking on the tread is down to the car sitting . My mums wee picanto has had this issue twice . 12 years old and only 11000 miles. First set of tyres were firestone, the second set were Goodyear. . No cracks on sidewalls anywhere but the tread on the inside edge ( away from the sun) was lifting
