Upgrades!!! of course
This week we decide to take a few days down in the Lyme Regis area and get the motorhome ready to go, then off to fill up with diesel and gas. Filling up with lpg I decided to see the tank gauges fill so opened up the gas locker whilst filling. As I held the button I notice some vapour escaping from the filling joints and thought to myself it’d a good idea to nip these up before the next fill....anyway the vapour escaped more and more as filling went on...the second I became concerned and let go of the filling button the gas joint/nut gave way and let go. It was like a steam train venting out the side, great big clouds of gas whooshing out ... suffice to say had a moment ????
Anyway it was literally a second or two and the gas escape stopped but I did get a big fright.
So we now have ruptured fill hoses which will be a big problem.

As we had nearly two full bottles and checking all the hoses we decided to carry on with our trip and contacted our supplying dealer to see if they could take a look as we were sort of in the area. They couldn’t have been more helpful. When we got there that afternoon around 3pm they were quite busy with other vans but straight away dealt with our gas system, checked out our other items and sorted them out as well. Left us reassured and happy with their immediate service.

so probably already been mentioned but just a reminder to inspect these now and again..

Wow.. Surprised the brass fittings have cracked like that. Last place I'd expect to fail. And not just one but two of them

The bottles look to be new, we're the hoses new or from a previous van?

The hoses should have dates on them ? Do You know if the date was up ? LPG is minus -42C

Classic overtight nut, with shrinking on cold few times and fatigue, eventually fractured. A small leak, cooled it enough to shrink more and open the fracture into a crack.
That’s my thinking anyway.

They were supposed to be all newly fitted with the van back in October last year, I know the van would be older as it has a build date going back to Feb/March but the Gaslow system should have been brand new at October. I didn’t get to see the dates on the hoses as they have now been changed but I will have a look at the new ones...
Only the second time I have filled them up too.

Who were they? Good service deserves to be recognised.

as does poor workmanship overtightening brass fittings on a safety critical system

Maybe, we all make mistakes, maybe the fittings were a bad batch? I’m not blaming anyone but how issues are dealt with is the important thing....

They could have been over tightened when they were installed. But worthwhile to check them on an ongoing basis. In view of your experience I assume you will be checking the connections everytime you open the locker.
Thanks for posting. Will check mine. (y)
Edit.
Hadn't seen the previous posts re overtightening but the concensus seems to indicate that was the cause . Probably best to check the other bottle connections also if they haven't been changed also.

And I'd definitely send the photos to Gaslow for info/comment. They could be from a dodgy batch. I've found the Gaslow techy staff extremely helpful.
Even though they are brass they shouldn't crack like that unless a gorilla with no mechanical sensitivity has seriously over-tightened them with a 2 foot long spanner.

On the underslung gas tank on my MH, the brass compression nut on the tank output cracked in a similar way, and I lost the whole 60 litres over a couple of weeks standing on the drive. Fortunately it all leaked to open air, and no sparks handy to set it off. Yes, this sort of thing definitely happens. One reason there's holes in the gas locker floor.

This is what the service guy said when he changed them over....it happens so holes in floor. LPG is heavier than air so will sink out of these holes. At least the brass fittings on mine failed before the one way valve so nothing came out of the bottles.

That left hand bottle wants turned to the right a bit or needs a longer "shared" hose fitted, as the hose looks to be under a bit of strain right at the ferrules ?

This was a supposedly 2 year old hose!!!
I understand even the metal case hoses are rubber inside?

Had a service hab & chassis a couple of weeks ago, they rang to say the Pipes from the filler to the underslung tank were out of date and the regulator was also out of date, these are things which I would rather have checked and changed, it was originally installed by Gasit so they used their replacements, if you are not careful you drift into the out of sight out of mind.

I noticed that too and take great care not to have hoses 'tight' which can put undue pressure on them.

Basically a bad installation and as you say far too tight a bend on the connection hose from the left side cylinder so they probably forced the right hand fitting as it doesn’t appear to be vertical ⚠️☹️

I have checked the installation on that bend, don't worry, it's not tight or pulling it just looks it from that angle. Besides, the hoses have all been replaced from that picture. I have turned the bottle slightly to lessen the bend so it has enough give. Thanks
