Check your fridge for contraband

Two metres long. Is this what they want?

Who's going to be the first to offer the decal,
"Pas de saucisses laissées dans le véhicule pendant la nuit"
or,
"No quedan salchichas en el vehículo durante la noche"
or
"Keine Würste mehr über Nacht im Fahrzeug"

I can just see some shady Arthur Daley character setting up a stall on a Motorway Aire just south of Calais. "Want some genuine British sausages?" "Real British sausages, just fell off the back of a lorry."

I see from 1st January UK sausages are not allowed to be exported in raw condition to the EU.

There will be random searches by the Police de la saucisse anglaise, be warned!
I have been searching for the rules that apply to us, have a you a link please?

We got caught out a few years ago when the Foot and Mouth epidemic was reaping havoc.
Arriving at Plymouth to board a ship to Spain they were checking fridges for meats and cheese, we quickly put all the items we thought might cause a problem into the oven. When our turn came to be checked the guy only asked if we had anything but did not check the fridge, I answered honestly, no there is nothing in the fridge that’ going to cause a problem.
As soon as we were aboard we repacked the fridge and left it on hoping the crew did not wander around checking for heat emitting from the vent.
When we got to Santander and the unloading commenced we did the reversal of the fridge contents only to find that the exiting from the port was taking a long time. The Spanish customs were going into every caravan and motor home and conducting a proper search. When they emptied our oven all the food was passed out the door and put into very large drums in the middle of the the two rows of traffic. Not even a thank you !
Oh well it was a good try. We did wonder where all the “ contraband “ actually finished up though.

Thanks for that (y) When I click the link in the BBC story most of it seems to be quite old rules and regs, about the only thing I can see about sausages or POAO is that the exporter will need a EHC Export Health Certificate which seems fair to me, I think we need to wait and see some more detail re personal consumption allowances.

Not an EU story but we were travelling back to Namibia from the Kalahari in a 4x4 camper and at the border the usual questions, have you get any unlicensed firearms, pets, native wood for the fire, etc, and then "do you have any meat" and like a fool I said yes, we had just taken them out of the freezer and put them in the sink to defrost where the customs officer would never have looked anyway. Customs officer carries them away in triumph, we know what he had for his dinner..I hope they chocked him !

You left your fridge on on the ferry?

Apparently, they are allowed to be frozen though. I was reading a report yesterday about a farmer who was switching to exporting frozen sausages and felt it was the way to go.

down a bit in this report
Brexit: UK sausage makers face EU export ban https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-55479354
Where do they export sausages to? Iv yet to find any English ones in France.

I love my British sausage as much as the next Union Jack (sic) shorts wearing bloke,
BUT!
I can't wait to get across the ditch to get my fill of Toulouse sausage.

So this amusing story is about you trying to circumvent the rules that were trying to stop the spread of a very serious disease that can have catastrophic effects on farmers and the food industry. I work with farmers and can remember their fear that their herd was going to be the next to be slaughtered and burned in huge pits.

We can buy English sausages in our area of Spain. There are a few English butchers that make their own though frankly I’ve never found them to be that good. Mercadona do a good ‘butifarra‘ sausage which isn’t bad on the BBQ in summer, I have been Thinking of buying an electric mincing machine as I’ve recently got into making my own potted beef, if I do buy one then I’ll definitely have a go at making sausages.

This site explains the rules pretty clearly. Already told the ex-pats on the site in France where we have a static van that I won't be doing the bacon / cheese from Bookers next year.

many years ago when travelling Australia fruit and veg was not allowed to cross the territory boarders so not to waste it tables were set up on each side of the boarder, you emptied your fruit and veg onto the table and crossed the boarder free of any contamination. you then stopped at the table on the other side to restock.
easy no hassle no issues and no waste.

last checked 03/09/2020 so I assume the information is not exactly up to date re the agreement that was signed just a few days ago.

Most people find andouilette revolting, still each to his own. I don't think 2kg of pet food is much use to two border collies we usually take at least 15kg.

Here we go again , did I mention sausages, burgers or anything else with hooves, no, we do not eat them since the “ mad cow” that somehow our farmers managed to create due to feeding animals food rendered down from other animals.
We love chicken, frozen breasts, in bread crumbs, curreys, done with pasta or rice.
As far as I knew chickens did not have foot and mouth, I could be corrected here though, and I am sure that “ long life “ milk was not a problem, the Spanish still nicked it though, along with margarine and home made pasta sauce.
Yes, I used to leave the fridge on, as many others we used to travel with did, and hope we were not caught out or had a problem. And do’nt tell me that does not still go on.
I have not travelled with BF on that route for many years but found the drive to Spain or Portugal more relaxing than worry about time schedules, strikes or fuel supply’s. So you should be safe enough now without my “ rule bending “
