From the Sky deputy political editor - apparently being discussed in Cabinet today.

Politics live: Ministers discuss scrapping annual MOTs

Ministers discussed changing MOT rules to help ease cost of living crisis

More information is emerging about the ideas raised at today's cabinet meeting on the cost of living crisis.

According to Sky's deputy political editor Sam Coates, the requirement on cars that are older than three years to have annual MOTs could be changed.

The proposal, which is understood to have been put forward by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, was to increase the gap between checks to two years.

It might help you and me, but how will my local MOT chap handle a halving of his income?
For 15 years I've been using a place that does nothing apart from MOT's.

I guess some garages make most of the money not from the MOT fee but from doing necessary repair work.

This was proposed a while ago but was shouted down by the motor mechanics lobby... obviously on the grounds of safety and nothing to do with members income.

In France MOT every two years but motorcycles don’t require one at all.

At least they didn’t when we had our base there, pre- Br&@:t

Here in France, Still every 2 years after the vehicles 4th birthday unless over 3500 Kg then yearly with 6 month smoke test, although if registered as a motorhome then even if over 3500Kg every 2 years.

In some parts of Australia you don’t have to have an MOT all the time you own the car. It if you sell it on it has to have an MoT. I would bet mine done every year for piece of mind. (y)

crazy idea, our failure rate is around 30% after the 6 month extension it went up to around 50%, a lot of people dont look after their cars so there will be far more death traps on the road, most of the tyres we fail are through to the cords but would have lasted longer if the tracking had been done but not many people bother to look at them

This van was in for test a few weeks ago

2 years here in Spain.
Only up to 10 years old then it is yearly.
Commercials are yearly after 2 years from new up to 10 years, then every 6 months.
Vehicles that are taxis or hire cars, yearly from new then 6monthly after 10.

Just heard on the radio that the DVLA might be privatised as it's so useless.
I thought it was the Passport Office. Mind you, they are both equally deficient.

No MOT at all here in the Isle of Man! You can (and many do) drive a total wreck. If you import a car more than (I think) 2 years old it has to be thoroughly tested. Many a Rolls-Royce has been failed whilst the local farmer with a rust bucket can have a laugh while driving by.

That, in my opinion, will make it worse.
It needs picking up and shaking vigorously.
Ensure all staff actually know what's expected of them and learn about DVLA requirements.....not just tick boxes.
I reckon half the staff don't even know they work for DVLA

Windfall tax on the energy producers with the money used to reduce energy bills would be a better option.

If we are serious about helping with the cost of living I don’t think dropping an MOT will help. It grabs headlines but those worse off can’t afford cars so is pretty irrelevant to them.

Erm, The wholesale sellers? Do you mean the generators? Are you talking about electric or fuel?

The producers, oil, gas and electric.

Sorry, I know the sellers are going bust at a stupid rate. I should have been clearer. Edited the post.

Last week all cars electric, u turn and now encouraging old bangers.

Maybe the government has realised that electric cars need electricity to charge them and windfarms don't work with no wind...

Sure, BP made decent profits in 2021, but a stonking loss in 2020. Are we going to underwrite the losses too?
