I've had my van uprated, which takes it above the magic 3500 kgs, waiting for the stuff to arrive.

I've spoken to DVLA regards what to do next.
Guy at DVLA tells me I must:

Fill in V5C with new tax class....ok.
Fill in V5C with new Gross weight.....ok.
Explanation letter....ok.
Send all new documentation relating to the change....in original form?? (They lose stuff, but say everything is always returned...yeah, right.)

Here's where it gets daft?

He also tells me that because the vehicle becomes PHGV I must get it plated at an HGV test staion and send the original plating cert, GTV7 if I remember rightly, with the application.

(This because MOT will no longer apply, as it will be HGV, so Plating and Testing Regs will kick in, which is BS, same MOT regime for a motor caravan exists.)

OK...
so who's done it, what do I send to the demon DVLA?

Didn't have to do any of that. I used SV Tech and just had to send in the filled in V5C together with their paperwork and a new V5C arrived 10 days later. I believe the process is the same if you use Minxy's guy.

Never heard of anyone having to go to an HGV station for plating. I used the one SV sent me and I know a few people on here have actually made their own which is perfectly legal.

It won't be an HGV for MOT purposes, it will still be class 4.

PHGV is a VED class, nothing more.

That's what I told the numpty on the phone, @NickNic.
Plate and Plating Cert GTV6 and 7 only apply to HGVs, an updated Motor Caravan is still a Motor Caravan.
As you say, Class 4 MOT applies, not plating and testing procedures.

Have you used either of the consultants to uprate or have you done it yourself?

If you've used one of the consultants then just send what they tell you to and ignore the numptys in Swansea.

Consultancy, Nick (JR).
Already spoke to them, will do as they say, they've probably done more than the numpty I spoke to.
If they hadn't done away with VROs it would have been a breeze.

Another DVSA desk jockey who doesn't know the rules and procedures.
If you ring again you will get to speak to someone else who MAY know the rules.

Just sent the docs you have sorted and wait.

Yeah John.
He kept using the phrase "on the screen it says...".

Not necessarily.
I advised a funster a few years ago what to do at the local office.....his request to update was refused.
I suggested as in my post above and go back.
Next desk jockey did it there and then and issued a new tax disc at the same time.

Some know what they're doing, some are as thick as pigshit.

All you need do is fill in the changes on page 2 of the V5C
Send this with photocopies only if the new design weight certificate and the cover letter from JR
Expect 4 weeks with DVLA

My numpty mate was adamant they wanted the originals.
I asked him about copies, mentioning DVLA being good at losing many documents sent to them.
He assured me they always send them back within four weeks.
I asked him if he could personally promise me they wouldn't lose them and he said they always return them within........etc.
Reading from the screen, bless him!

I intend to fill in page 2, send copies and see what happens next.

Original v5 yes
Everything else copies only
If you are lucky it may be less than four weeks but mine wasn't

I actually started checking my details on the dvla vehicle checker during week three and eventually it said 4750kg a few days before the V5 came back

@johnp10, having just gone through exactly what you are now doing John, and waiting for my new V5, I've just checked our MH details online.

Our MH has gone from a 3 AXLE RIGID BODY @5000Kgs....................to a 2 AXLE RIGID BODY @ 5500Kgs.

How the hell does that work out?
Like you say John, as thick as pig sh1t.

Cheers,

Jock. :(

Also be prepared for the V5 to be returned with the revenue weight at the increased weight but the Gross weight still showing 3500, took me 4 months to get the correct V5.

I had the same as Lenny above, 2 V5's returned to me with the wrong weight showing. I did mine when the VRO's were still open, but you still had to send the forms off to DVLA for the new V5

how much does John charge to replate atm ?
Also i take it that you have to notify your insurance of the new weight ?

1. = £142 (he used to only charge about £75. ;) )

2. = I should imagine so.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Not at the Beverley local office you didn't....

Everything was done at the counter.
Forms checked, MOT checked, insurance checked, old tax disc cancelled, New tax disc issued.
Any 'form sending' was done by the office.
Couple of weeks later New V5 arrived.
