Another naive question...thank goodness for this brilliant site!

We are told that it is important to replace the cam belt on a MH ( in our case an autotrail chieftan) at 50,000 miles or every 5 years, whichever comes first. Is this right, and should any previous replacement always be recorded?

Spot on Sue, our last belt change was recorded in the vehicle service book and a sticker was placed in the engine bay stating both date and mileage of the change.

Have you definitely got a cam belt? If your Chieftan has the 3.0L engine then it would have a chain and not a belt which does not have to be changed.

Same here - the general rule appears to be that a cam belt lasts 5 years, and having one snap will cause highly expensive buggerage to your engine. Replacement is one of the more expensive jobs, but spread the cost over five years and it's a relatively small price for avoiding a disaster.

On the 2.8jtd I think Fiat quote something like 60 or 75,000 miles.. Most motorhome will never get anywhere near that and so the 5 year recommendation is applied.. Better safe than sorry and a good point for later if you decide to sell...
