Hi All,

Thinking of going on a last minute trip to Bruges or Ypres for the New Year. Anybody know whether it's busy and how busy the Aires are likely to be?

Mike

Probably both quite busy but likely to be room at both I would think.
This is just a guess, no real time knowledge I'm afraid.
Go you'll enjoy.

We went to Bruges and Amsterdam last year , the fireworks were quite spectacular from Amsterdam citicamp last year, probably doing the same this year.

Amsterdam for me but get down into the thick of it in dam square.
Fantastic place

We were at both last week or so Ypres we stopped for a short time beside the Menin Gate and had a look at it,, Brugges however was a disaster as I depended on the Tom Tom for directions, it led me in to a place I did not want to be and nearly went up a oneway street. Not doing that again so we left for a quieter place.. These old towns are not the place for a big van, even a car would be troublesome.

Don't know where you were going, the aire in Brugge is simple to find, it is next to a coach park, so far larger vehicles have no problem getting in and out.

We are going to Ypres over New Year - booked on Camping Jeugdstadion.

The newer Aire on the outskirts only has about 18 spaces and a maximum of 48 hours but if you fancy it you can park in the 'Fishermans' car park down the lane on the left hand side of the Aire - hook-up on the Aire but not down the lane.

If your going anywhere new and especially near a city or town have a look on street view first, saved me a few times.

I have visited both on a whim at short notice and never had a problem yet, both great places so the choice is yours.
The Aire in Ypres was packed for Nov 11th so I stayed down the track at the side of the lake, no facilities, and no charge. :xThumb:

Thanks for the replies. I've stayed at both on numerous occasions but never during Christmas or New Year. If there's a decent chance of getting a place on one or the other we may take a chance and give it a go. Bruges is my preferred out of the two because the City is more entertaining. I suppose there's always the coach park if the aire is full at Bruges.

another vote for 'the fishermans car park' - drive past the aire and the hotel and youll find it easily. its also on a cycle path into Ypres, though we didn't actually try the cycle path, we stayed on the aire for a couple of nights and found it ideal

I thought aire in Brugge was shut/reduced in size currently for work???

I’m sure I read that on here recently

Brugge is good for new year we did it last new year, campsite and aire were both very busy. Luckily we had booked campsite.

Brugge has 2 aires one is across the road from the other.one is now shut for good if you dont get to brugge 2days before new yr you will get on but not with electric.you will have to park on the coach section no leccy.we have just arrived tonight at Amsterdam aire its packed only about 30 places left i think non with electric.

If going to Brugge exercise caution. As said above the aire has been dramatically reduced in size with just the part by the marina available. We went in September and were lucky to get a spot. There is over spill on the coach park but not sure of the legality and certainly no facilities there and the same price. Yppes has plenty of parking generally and their is a nice site that you book via internet and it's mainly automated.

Thanks for all your replies. We decided to go to Bruges and we managed to get a space on the aire. It’s now full and an attendant is directing Motorhomes to the back of the coach park.

We’ll probably stay here through New Year and enjoy the local celebrations.

We were thinking of going there, but will probably give it a miss now if already full.

There will be some movement in the morning. Best to get there by mid to late morning for the best chance of a spot.

7 Van's at the Aire in Ypres tonight - 6 Brit Vans and one Belgian plated van.
And it's cold out there tonight ......

Which aire are you on?

We might head there tomorrow.

Yes, €15 and you'll need a degree in electronics to check in on their automated machine at Reception.
Or you could ask one of the Brits and let them totally confuse you .......

Looks like everyone has given up on ypres , just us and a belgie, will probably head for bruges in the morning, take our chances and stay in the coachpark if we have to.

We’ve been in Brugge since Friday and it’s very busy with around 50 motorhomes on the coach park in addition to the 37 on the Aire.

If you time it right and linger in the right place you may get a space on the aire. The most movement seems to occur between around 10am and 12 noon. Get here real early and you may just drive straight into a space after the early risers have moved.

If you come, say hello... reg number as forum name.

Will do Mike, be surprised if anyone moves off on new years eve though? Are they still letting vans in the coachpark?

There’s a few moving off this morning... some spaces appearing but they are filling up again. You need to be here early and loiter...

Just arrived in far corner of coach park, overlooking the river, nice spot, except no electric, which is annoying when you are paying for it.

Stayed at Jeugdstadion a few weeks ago. 15 euro which was fine for me.
Weather dire, but the Christmas markets were great. The walk in from Bruges (Memling) is 40 mins or so. Don't take the moho into the old part of the town. A maze of narrow streets with challenging parking. Stay outside and walk or bus in.
