Rio is 22 months and has suddenly started barking at nothing - well it’s nothing to us but I guess he reckons he can hear something! We are going to Europe in the motorhome at the beginning of March and I’m worried about him barking and annoying people, especially if it’s in the middle of the night. Also we have always been able to leave him when we go out using a webcam, but wondering about that now. Has anyone any suggestions as to how we can stop him at home which will, hopefully, be the same in the MH.

I can't help except to ask,has he/she been to a Vet lately, if it's only just started, could it be in pain?
It's nice to hear from a considerate dog owner! 👍

Our dog sadly departed hardly barked at all when young but barked more and more as he got older I think it could well be them becoming more assertive as they get older.

Our dog suffers regular ear infections and we have noted that he becomes very sensitive to the slightest noise ( which he will bark at ) when he has the start of a new infection.
Worth a check, at least you will eliminate it as a potential cause.

Our dog is barking a lot now in older age. In his case it's down to hearing loss. Way more voal since his hearing started to decline. Weirdly also barks(and always has) whenever we have a hug. I'm a huggy person and it's almost like he's policing it. Damn dog...ruining a good hug

My vet explained to me that some dogs (such as mine) will lick their lips profusely when in pain. I had mistaken that for her enjoyment of me stroking along the length of her back as she lay on the floor. :( No whimpers or barks. I hadn't been aware then that she had arthrhitis in her spine. 😭 However, the vet explained that other breeds display pain/suffering in different ways, one of which can be through barking. hth

Have a look at Dogs Behaving Very Badly that was on tv tonight. All about barking dogs. May give you some ideas of how to progress. In my opinion he is one the best dog ' whisperers' I have come across.

If it is just an attention seeking habit I have often trained with a water spray bottle with success. The reaction is to shake their head which usually disconnects their reasoning for barking. It doesn’t take long for them to get the idea if you are quick to respond.

We have used a bark collar with great success. No pain involved. It simply gives a beep when she barks. The surprise immediately stops the barking.
The issue with ours was at toll stations or customs, ticket handover etc. she would bark non stop making all these transactions very stressful.

One journey day in France and by the second toll she’d stopped.

We’ve since given it to our neighbours whose dog was waking them up regularly at 4.00am. They reported success too.

There are ones that vibrate and buzz, plenty on Amazon. Just don’t use a shock collar as I think they are cruel.

Good luck.

Dogs find it difficult to bark when muzzled. Not an attractive solution but might help you get through the night? Never tried it myself though - the collar recommended by Mousy sounds worthy of a go.

I’m not sure if I’m assuming too much with you being based on Hayling Island!

But if so I can recommend a really good lady in Waterlooville who does all sorts of training, including the Psychology type stuff.
For the dog mainly but of course the training always extends to the owner.

This is her company - http://doggycentre.com/about/
You’d need to talk to Kelly, ask if she can help, and say Nasher suggested you contact her.

She and her team have done wonders with our rescue who is a far less stressed doggy having been in their care.

Good of you to be concerned that your dog is going to disturb others whilst on you next trip.
We are aware and even have a neighbour who have a constant barking dog, but cannot control it.
Some owners don't even notice their dog is barking, but everyone else do.🐶

We got one of the non-shock type for our Minky but it don't half eat batteries so hubby doesn't use it! Might have to look for a rechargeable version, the trouble is that the 'unit' is quite large in relation to our pooch.

We use a small kiddies water pistol, 🔫 he gets told stop, if he continues he gets told again followed by a small squirt of water which he dislikes and stops.
After a few days the word stop worked in most cases, if he does persist then simply a show of the water pistol 🔫 is enough.

It also works on bad behaviour 👍

Tempted by one of these for when Minky barks, might blast her into orbit though! 😄

I would say it is odd at that dogs age. I’d take to vet and get him checked over and then even a dog behaviourist if required.

Question yourself and ask if anything for him has changed.

You want to get on top of it as you have many years of dog ownership left.

You are a good person for being concerned about other campers.

Good to read that dog owners are concerned - I assume for both their pet but also for others as yes barking dogs are a pain.

Absolutely! We found the most gorgeous place to park in Greece, it was paradise all day until 11pm when every flipping dog in the village took it in turns to provide a barking soundtrack all night long! There would be a 5 minute silence to lull you into hopefulness-sleep then……”woof woof woofy woof” 😱😂🙄

Reminds me of Spain.

Totally agree, Graham Hall from the above show will sort it in a very short space of time, generally the problem lies with the owners

Son used to use a tin filled with stones. Dog barks, rattle tin. It seemed to work very well.
Great idea, I train Springers and very occupationally get a barking one and this can be a pain when working them. Usually half fill a water bottle with a few small stone and rattle it when barking. Always seems to help, or try throwing a bunch of keys on the floor near the dog when he barks normally has the same effect.
I would never squirt a dog with water, this can and will cause issues in future with regards to for eg a dog in public and coming across children with a water pistol. Seen it when the dog was aggressive at the gun rather than water, but I could see what at caused the initial reaction from the dog.
Using a
water spray bottle to stop a dog from barking is generally not recommended by modern trainers as it's a punishment-based method that teaches through fear or surprise, potentially damaging your relationship, increasing anxiety, or causing aggression, without addressing the root cause of the barking

Graham Hall was very successful this week with the barking dogs
He highlighted the fact that telling the dog/ shouting at the dog when it barked reinforced the barking whereas waiting for the dog to stop and then praising it had a much more beneficial result. There must be a reason why the dog started. If male is it testosterone rearing its ugly head. Perhaps the reason seems innocuous to you but important to the dog. Good luck with the training.

Cesar milan is good at training,he is on utube
