Hi all
Going to have have the awning up most of the winter. Where we are winds forecast for 50mph today. So any one sujest a bomb proof awning. Are air awnings better than the ones with poles. Are drive away awnings strong?

With 40 odd years of pitching tents and things, the quality of pegging out pitching and location is the most important .in recent years weve used Outdoor revolution awnings and been happy generally. The poled version survived a real storm a few years back but once came back to a collapsed awning with hardly a wisper in the wind. Airbeams are supposed to be more resilient than poles but i suspect other design features are just as important. Recently storm Ellen persuaded us to take down the airbeam awning at 10pm at 12 we were safely stowed but the rocking whilst drinking tea had us moving the van. The beading was being ripped out of the c rail. We were on the brow of an hill 100m from the sea, so location has a bit of influence. I dont think there is a bomb proof awning, they are not designed with rhe same considerations as mountaineering tents. Slight concerns colapse it, leave it at night with folddd chairs tables etc ready for a quick colapse and stow peg down.

Cannot believe how many awnings there have been for sale in Classifieds on Fun,,,Wonder why? For permanent winter use i would buy a self standing quality tent,,BUSBY.

By design manufacturers make them hight specific so change van you may need to change awning. Nice earner, or would it be better to sell tunnels separately, for us maybe. Few years back at nec i noticed tents and awnings essentially same design tent £500 AWNING £950

We have a fiamma safari room - big and great when weather calm, but Saturday I wound awning straight back as wind threatening.
Problem is - two big hairy dogs! When the weather is like this and they object to sitting in the rain.
Solution today is to buy a dome tent from Cosco. Chances are they'll sleep overnight in it, but if not at least they can stay dry until bed time.

Thanks for replying. Ours just about made it through the night 50mph winds. So is the feeling air awnings are stronger. I was thinking maybe get next size up poles a couple of mm thicker.

We had an awning on the van when we helped out on a campsite but didn’t like it, if doing that again we would go for an old frame tent and have that instead.

Driveaway is best as we found out the hard way as you can disconnect from van and still use it. Attached to the van it shakes the hell out of it and can cause a lot of damage. Winter in Spain we just put the curtains up so can get them down in a hurry and wind in the Fiama. We use a free standing utiliy tent if long terming onsite there.
