Just passing on some useful info.
FDA have pulled this drug from public use.
A very common anti-acid medication.

Drug pulled

In the UK Zantac recall 8 October 2019.
Pharmacists will be aware of this.

You may be prescribed Cimetidine, sold under the brand name Tagamet among others, is a histamine H2 receptor antagonist that inhibits stomach acid production. If you are under 65.

Alternatives include esomeprazole (brand name Nexium), lansoprazole (brand name Prevacid), omeprazole (brand name Prilosec).

Good luck

I'm pretty sure Zantac gave my mother an ulcer.

As far as I can tell they stopped selling all Ranitidine tablets, including supermarkets own brands because some were found to have been contaminated by a chemical that had the potential to cause cancer. I expect that they will come back when the contaminant has been eradicated as they were massive sellers and very good at surpressing stomach acid. You can’t buy talcum powder, or at least many of the old brands for a similar reason as well.

Had a medication review a few weeks ago and still on Ranitidine, Doc said It Is ok' what would you do?

Just picked up this weeks meds and the Ranitidine Is out of stock, perhaps waiting for new production.

Oddly enough vets give Zantac syrup to cats and dogs with gastric problems. Worked well for our cat but no longer available due to the FDA cancer scare.

I've just been swapped from Lansoprazole to Ranitidine? After years of Lanzoprasole it seemed a good idea cause it can cause some osteo problems if taken long term, allegedly? so I've decided to take 3 x 15ml of aloa vera juice daily and ranitidine 150mg as and when required....and now I've read this:oops:

I have to say though, that the AV three times a day really has worked for me and only means I get a certain degree of reflux at certain times, whereas, if I missed a dose of Lanzoprasole in the past I would really suffer that day, all day.

Certain brands were found to be contaminated with NDMA which can “possibly“cause cancer, these brands were withdrawn in the UK plus over the counter (OTC) brands. As the NDMA can’t be excreted it is a possible cause for concern. It hasn’t been banned yet on prescription in the UK but I suppose it might be. It’s not the actual ranitidine compound that’s dangerous, it’s the contaminant they are worried about. Don’t suddenly stop it if it’s working and it’s on your prescription. Your GP will be well aware.

If you want something to worry about there’s this Coronavirus thing going on.

I'm not overly worried as my doctor spoke to me yesterday and nothing was mentioned but it's just good to be aware of these things. She also mentioned coronavirus too, so I'm aware of 2 medical facts now;)

I had a major overhaul and review of my medication a few years back. Taken of Ranitidine and put on omeprazol amongst other changes.

Read 'Heartburn - Fast Tract Digestion' by Norman Robillard. It's on kindle. It makes so much sense and will put you back in control of the problem instead of years of drugs.

Can you take omeprazole long term? I thought you got magnesium deficiency if you did.

Speak to your pharmacist. They will sort it with your doctor.
And change your doctor if he/she can't keep abreast of withdrawal notices.

Omeprazole like all the prazoles have side effects. It ends up being a balance between the damage caused by the heartburn and the damage caused by the drugs. Obviously if you can find another way of dealing with the problem it's better for you in the long run.

Getting off the prazoles is very very hard. In one trial they gave healthy people with no symptoms omeprazole for several weeks. All of them had heartburn for some time when they came off the drug.

Those drugs are a goldmine for big pharma companies.

Yes, when I came off Lanzoprasole I did so while taking A vera juice so it reduced the reflux symptoms quite considerably, most of the time although I had really bad days too. The GP mentioned that but I think I'm over that stage now, I hope.

I found chewing gum or celery helped. Your saliva is naturally alkaline and you keep swallowing it for some time.

I've been taking Ranitidine for over 20 years ...... nothing else (including changes in lifestyle) works, or makes things worse and it will often have awful side effects. Ranitidine has been in short supply but I have never actually run out (been down to 2 days supply a couple of time).

My heartburn has a known cause and there is no viable treatment at the moment - even if there was no Covid crisis.

I'd spoken to a few people who swore by apple cider vinegar. I obviously don't know how serious your reflux is but for me this has become a miracle cure when I get the first symptoms.

Just purchased Kindle version as my wife suffers, so I'll read to see what can be done, thanks (y) Makingtrax

Good luck. It worked for me within a short while, together with the chewing gum and celery. I've been off tablets nearly 3 years and don't even take Gaviscon. It treats the problem at the root cause.

Those of you who maybe on Atorvastatin check before changing to omeoprazole as they interact with each other I think but not sure omeoprazole stops atorvastatin from working properly

I was supposed to have some blood tests to check this.

I have been on it for 11 years, but decided once my doc said it was a concern that I would see how I got along without it.

Been off it about 4 months now. I get heartburn now and again but I did when I was taking it as well.

I took ZANTAC years ago,,it caused me breathing problems,,,BUSBY.

Personally I take a tablespoon in about 100ml of warm water. Honestly, for me it works. Wouldn’t fancy its chances if I’d drunk a bottle of red wine after a curry and a bag of chile crisps but I don’t do that

I`ve been on Omeprazole, for over 5 years. (I have a Barrett`s oesophagus) At the last review, 5 Weeks ago, No mention was made of coming off or changing?.
